In this story each year they had a drawing for who would get stoned men women and children, so that there crops would be big for that year.  This year Tessie was the one chosen to be stoned and her words when she was being stoned were “it's not fair”.  The worst part about this whole thing is that they made children participate in the drawing and potentially be killed.

Tessie, a wife and mother of four children, easily attempts throwing her own daughter under the bus, by demanding that her married daughter, who's last name is now that of her husband’s, should participate. In the short story “The Lottery” by, Shirley Jackson, we are in a village of people that are waiting to see who has won the lottery to get stoned to death. At one point when the villagers are waiting Mr. Summer's says, “guess we better get started, get this over with, so’s we can go back to work” (88). The man wants to get it over with, stone the person and just go back to work.
