The life of extreme skier Adam Roberts is a cautionary tale about the complexities of mental health in extreme sports. Adam was a talented athlete who met a tragic end in an avalanche, sparking debate about whether his death was accidental or planned. The narrative captures the dilemma faced by the Northwest Avalanche Center in Seattle, which initially received the news of Adam's accident (Solomon). The center's executive director, Scott Schell, was among those who questioned the circumstances surrounding the tragedy. Evidence suggests that Adam was a fearless skier, pushing boundaries where others would hesitate. His audacity is exemplified by his various feats, including ski runs that even professionals consider dangerous. However, it is also revealed that Adam struggled with mental health issues, adding complexity to his daring exploits (Solomon). The story of Adam Roberts is a poignant reminder that extreme athleticism and mental illness can sometimes intersect in complicated ways. It raises questions about the responsibility of sports organizations and communities to recognize and address mental health issues among their members.

Wim Hof, better known as "The Iceman," was popular with celebrities and the public for his extreme skills and teachings on cold exposure, breathing exercises, and mental fortitude. Such as climbing Mount Kilimanjaro topless and running marathons in extreme conditions, he promotes his method through Innerfire seminars and expeditions, claiming it can cure disease and enable practitioners to manipulate their immune systems. Hof's method is described as a combination of cold exposure, mindfulness and breathing exercises inspired by meditation and yogic breathing. It is designed to help individuals bypass their comfort-seeking instincts and better cope with challenges and pain (Harding, 2022). Hough has a tragic personal history, having lost his first wife, which led him to discover the therapeutic effects of cold exposure as a means of coping with grief (Harding, 2022). Although the scientific community was skeptical about Wim Hof's extreme approach to human potential, including cold exposure and breathing, it also attracted attention and followers. His personal experiences and transformations become powerful narratives. His goal is to bring his practice to a wider audience, hoping to benefit the sick and suffering (Harding, 2022). Ultimately Hough's story is emblematic of the growing interest in self-improvement.

Via conversations and first hand accounts of 15 extreme sports enthusiasts, this paper argues that extreme sports are avenues by which to gain humility and courage and undergo personal transformations. Contrary to popular belief, extreme sports are not merely reckless activities, but purposeful and profound with a myriad of benefits. Reflecting on personal experiences and shared passions, one BASE jumper described that “it’s about accepting that you’re mortal and that you’re very vulnerable and that you’re like a piece of dust really or a leaf in the wind” (Brymer, Oades 121). Doing activities that make one reconcile with the possibility of death and let go of control, the paper argues, causes individuals to “explore parts of oneself that one was not even aware existed” (Brymer, Oades 121). The paper also explores the idea that “courage might not just be about how one copes with events that are not searched for but might also be involved in activities that are searched out” (Brymer, Oades 124). Extreme sport fanatics express an elevated sense of courage, since performing such acts requires a quiet mind and suppression of fearful emotions. In conclusion, through careful observations and conversations, the paper sheds light on extreme sports and the unparalleled mental and emotional developments that allow participants to have a more nuanced/deeper understanding of the world.

Sequoia underwent a journey of self reflection and transformation after the passing of her brother and father in an alpine climbing accident. She found that during this, she gained heightened awareness for the little things in life. No longer did she see the world as it was, but found a deeper meaning to her everyday life. This caused her to go through an impactful healing process. In reading her brother’s journal, Sequoia began to be more aware of her surroundings and she fell in love with mountains as her father once did. “When you’re in that cloud of anger you think the world kind of rotates around you a little bit, but because of that journey I got to take with him through his writing I slowly became more aware of my surroundings, looking at these BEAUTIFUL cathedrals of mountains.” (Schmidt) Through this she felt more connected to her family members than when they were once alive. It was through extreme sports such as BASE jumping where she found solace, making her feel happier and more at peace than she had ever been. During this process she embraced forgiveness as a state she was in and how living with her wounds made her who she is today.

1. Option One: Extreme sports in media --> popularity gains from sensationalized, "shocking" content --> How does the addictive nature of getting clicks/views on extreme sports content influence individuals to pursue the sport?

Many have risked their lives all over the world just to get the perfect picture for social media. We are familiar with the phrase “Do it for the Gram” when taking pictures we know would look good for our profile. However, in doing so several people have died or have been hospitalized due to standing on the edge of a cliff, trying to take a picture with a wild animal, standing in the middle of a rip current, or balancing on the edge of a building. People see how many likes these pictures get and how they become viral and aspire to do the same thing, when often times professionals partake in these activities.

2. Option Two: Extreme Sports --> Personal Transformation --> How do extreme sports promote personal growth and transformation, and what psychological and emotional processes are involved?

Participation in extreme sports can induce positive emotions, resilience, and the development of skills and physical abilities that support daily life. Action sports are meaningful, life-enhancing activities with the potential for profound positive transformation. Explanations for participation in extreme sports include factors such as rebellion against a risk-averse society, a desire for spectacle, an attraction to risk and danger, or a sense of belonging to a culture. The experience of extreme sports is nuanced and different from traditional sports. Learning and performance in extreme sports are associated with the development of productive person-environment relationships and effective coordination of environmental cues, emphasizing the importance of psychological processes in skill development.

www.frontiersin.org/articles/10.3389/fpsyg.2019.03029/full.
