         <description><![CDATA[<div>(c. 2050 - 1750 BC)<br><br>-by 2200 BC, the Old Kingdom had fallen<br>-pharaohs couldn't collect enough taxes to build and maintain pyramids<br>-in other words, they couldn't collect enough taxes to keep up with the expenses<br>-nobles soon gained enough power to challenge the pharaohs<br>-local nobles began to battle each other for power<br>-chaos throughout Egypt caused farming to decline <br>-this led to economic hardship and famine<br>-during the middle part of the Middle Kingdom, it was known as a period of order and stability<br>-in the mid-1700s BC, the Hyksos (a group from southwest Asia) invaded<br>-the Hyksos used horses, chariots, and advanced weapons to defeat Lower Egypt, and ruled for 200 years<br>-the people of Egypt eventually fought back in the mid-1500s<br>-eventually, Ahmose of Thebes drove the Hyksos out of Egypt and declared himself as king of Egypt, which begun the New Kingdom</div>]]></description>
