Pierre Bismuth was born in Neuilly-sur-Seine, France in 1963. He is now based in Brussels, Belgium.

Bismuths work has been shown in lots of different countries around the world, these include Vienna, New York, London, Nice and Paris.

In 2005 his film ‘Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind’ won him ‘Best Original Screenplay’ at the 77th Academy Awards alongside Michel Gondry and Charlie Kaufman. (Artspace, 2020).

One of his exhibition pieces called “The Jungle Book Project” was based around how children can become obsessed with watching and re-watching the same video repeatedly. He decided to try and get his god-daughter to watch something other than Winnie the Pooh and so bought a copy of The Jungle Book. He wanted to see how she would react to seeing the same film but hearing something completely different, before he could send them to her he had become “fascinated by the experience of listening to all the dubbed versions”. (Bugada and Cargnel, 2020).

In 2016, Pierre Bismuth created a second film called “Where is Rocky II?”. The film is based on a fake rock that was left in the Californian Desert by American artist Ed Ruscha, Bismuth hired a private detective and the film follows the pair as they try to find the rock, which is named “Rocky II”. (IMDB, 2020).

In an interview Bismuth said that he only started studying art in the late 80’s, before that he had studied visual communication at Les Arts Décoratifs in Paris. He began studying in Berlin and was interested in the work of Beuys. He also stated that he does not want to create art that appeals to everyone, but instead wants to focus and reaching a specific target audience.

Bismuth would take magazines, maps, pictures and pictures and fold them into whatever shape he liked. He would then unfold the origami and this unfolded model was now the art work, he would then name the piece after the shape it was folded into.

Pierre BISMUTH uses his artistic practice as a tool to examine our perception of reality, especially regarding our relation to cultural productions. With humour and minimal means, BISMUTH's work seeks to destabilize the codes of reading for even the most received forms of culture. His procedures seem to follow the laws of entropy by creating effects of constant transformation and spontaneous change, expending the excess energy of a system to reveal its paradoxes. The underlying aim of these strategies is always the same: to destabilize pre-established codes of perception by sabotaging the very logic of his material and to push the viewer to develop critical ideas when presented with cultural objects whose meaning seems obvious. 'En prévention de mauvais fonctionnement technique' ('To Prevent Technical Malfunctions') (unplugged Bruce NAUMAN video) presents the video of the American artist, with the monitors unplugged. 'Something Less Something More' is composed of a series of thin partitions, punctured by circles to remove the most material possible. The circles removed from the surface of the walls accumulate on the ground in a chaotic pile. The installation is completed by two new series, 'De rouge à rien' ('From Red to Nothing') and 'De vert à quelque chose d'autre' ('From Green to Something Else'). Each new presentation of the series reproduces the color used in the previous exhibition, but with a barely perceivable difference, by the introduction of white or another color respectively. The series 'Remplacer par le même' ('Replace with the Same') plays on the idea of the substition of one thing by its double. Finally, the 'Pliages' ('Folds') are origami created from different materials, such as magazines, newspapers, posters and maps. The origami, once completed, is unfolded, yet each work keeps the title of the corresponding origami figure it once embodied.

source: http://www.teamgal.com/artists/pierre_bismuth/exhibitions/11/one_mans_masterpiece_is_another_mans_mess

This book was written by Andre Gide.
It is the story of a Pastor who finds a blind girl and takes her to live with him and his family. His young daughter names her Gertrude and they teach her what different sounds are, where she had lived before the old woman had never spoke to her and so the Pastor and his family teach her about the world. Both the Pastor and his eldest son, Jacques, fall in love with Gertrude and she falls in love with Jacques.

Because we have been looking at blindness as a theme this book could be interesting to look at because the whole story focuses around the Pastor and him teaching Gertrude how to understand the world. This book is also interesting as it is told through diary entries.

This book was written by Antoine Saint Exupery
It is the story of the Pilot who crashes in the desert and meets The Little Prince. The Little Prince teaches the Pilot about characters he has met, including The Rose, The Snake and The Fox. Each of these characters has taught The Little Prince something and he teaches these lessons to the Pilot.
One of these lessons are that looks aren't what they seem, this is seen when the Little Prince visits the garden of the rose and sees that they all look exactly like his rose which upsets him because in his mind his rose is no longer unique or special. He then meets the fox who teaches him that it is the time that he spent with his rose that made it special.

This book has some quotes that we could look at that relate to site:
"It is only with the heart that one can see rightly; what is essential is invisible to the eye"
