On this website, there are a ton of resources that can help you get started with using it in your classroom. There is an introductory video, a teacher guide, how-to videos, and much more. Skype can be used to take students to places around the world on virtual field trips, interact with other classrooms across the globe, and help bring learning to life.

https://education.microsoft.com/skype-in-the-classroom/getting-started

My students would love this.

This is a great resource that lists many of the exciting virtual field trips your class could go on using Skype! I teach in a very low SES school so my students do not come with many life experiences and it is very hard for them to picture what the places we talk about in Social Studies are really like. In this article it mentions taking a virtual field trip to some National Parks and I think this would be a wonderful way for my students to see what an actual forest or the Grand Canyon looks like because many of them will never travel their in real-life.
https://blogs.skype.com/skype-classroom/2016/10/12/exciting-new-virtual-field-trips-from-skype-in-the-classroom/

In this article, it really helps show the importance of creating virtual field trips for our students. A teacher wrote this and talks about how he used to lecture to his students and hang up pictures of these places he was talking about. At the end of the unit, he had them write about which place they would like to visit. He was disappointed when most of them wrote about wanting to visit local places, even one girl wanted to visit Hardees just down the street. He was deflated, but then soon discovered Skype and has started taking his students on virtual field trips any where he wants to take them and the students are excited! They are getting to meet students from all over the globe and now they are wanting to visit those places not just the local Hardees! I think this article proves just how important it is for us to create these meaningful experiences for our students because they really have no clue what the world is like outside of their city! I think using these virtual field trips would spark so much of an interest for my students.
https://blogs.skype.com/skype-classroom/2016/11/10/from-paper-cut-outs-to-live-adventures-with-skype-in-the-classroom/

In this article, written by Todd Flory, a 4th grade teacher from Andover, KS, he shares how Skype can be used for Global Collaboration projects that will help students feel connected to the rest of the world. He said by having his class participate in projects like this, they become emotionally engaged which helps them retain the information they are learning. One of the topics he had his students learn about was the importance of education, so he Skyped with students in Nigeria and they told Todd's students about how they risked their lives to get to school every day to get an education. I could see my students really benefiting from this because they come to school now and do not value the education they are getting, so maybe if they saw what students in other parts of the country were doing just to learn, maybe they wouldn't take their education for granted. Todd says that, "By connecting with classes and peers from around the world, students gain a better understanding of our common humanity and realize that information is at their fingertips, just waiting to be seized."

https://blogs.skype.com/skype-classroom/2016/09/02/skype-collaborations-a-glimpse-of-the-world-for-our-students/

I thought maybe they could be stacked, but that didn't work and almost made me panic because I had a couple posts disappear for a minute! Is there a way to collapse them? Just wanting to organize this so it doesn't turn in to a jumbled mess once everyone posts their 5 resources. Thanks! Lisa

This resource suggests using blogs as a means to address formal writing outside of the realm of the simple academic essay. It also encourages the use of Twitter with its 140 character limit as a way to "practice brevity and clarity" (Alrubail 2016). The article further suggests making writing on social media consistent to get the most benefit from it. I am thinking of using this form of consistent social media posts as a way to build fluency in different types of writing for different purposes. Want a quick chapter summary? Twitter. Want a detailed response? Blog.

https://www.edutopia.org/discussion/how-use-social-media-strengthen-student-writing

This article discusses the possibility of posting student videos to YouTube as a means of sharing their work in class with the outside world. This might be an effective way to heighten the discourse of student presentations by making them feel they have a real audience. I see multiple applications for this. First, I can take students presentations on real world topics, like arguing for a proposition to pass or fail and post it online/have them send it to policy makers. Also, I can take formal presentations and ask students to have their parents review and score them (this is particularly important for their Post Grad Plans).

http://www.edudemic.com/how-to-use-social-media-as-a-learning-tool-in-the-classroom/

Some possible ideas for this are listed as well, including interviewing relatives for family history projects, recording speech recitations, or having students listen to recordings from each other to learn specific tasks.

This article focuses primarily on the need for schools to have a Facebook presence. With the possibility of a growing amount of competition for students with the continued growth of magnet and charter schools, public schools will need to start considering PR as part of their operating procedures. This article recommended posting successful Alumni on the school's Facebook page. While it is not just publishing a single assignment, this is a way for students to feel like their work during/after high school is valued.

https://www.edutopia.org/blog/creating-dynamic-facebook-page-your-school-anne-obrien

Wikis in the classroom

This resource suggests the use of Wikis in the classroom. It focuses on using Wikis for debates (an interesting idea considering a lot of news consumption is now through digital media). You could also use this space to publish student written work or have them collaborate on a given task (like revising a flawed piece of student work). I could see myself using this resource for the Post Grad Plan I have students create. Every student could make a Wiki with all of their research, photos, videos, and tours posted online. This resource could then be used in subsequent years for students doing career exploration to see what the students who came before them did and maybe encourage them to go down a similar career path. I could also encourage seniors to update these wikis as they go after high school to show students currently in high school what life is like when trying to become a specific career.

http://www.educationworld.com/a_lesson/using-wikis-in-the-classroom.shtml

When I first read this article, I didn't notice that this article is pulled from the saftey setting section from Facebook itself. This article entails many different strategies to use when utilizing Facebook in the classroom such as modeling citizenship, keeping personal information separate from professional information, and most of all keeping your identity and your students' identity safe when using Facebook. This is a great article for using Facebook safely and would be great guidelines to go over with your students before utilizing Facebook in the classroom.

https://www.facebook.com/safety/groups/teachers
Teaching Digital Kids. From beginner to advanced this article goes into detail of how to set the initial page up and how it can be shared in a way that all student and staff can access the page to find information all in one place. Some of the ideas to add on a school Facebook page as stated in this article are to share the school calendar, share school stories, post videos/pictures of fun events, show gratitude to the community, and honor those for outstanding achievements. As an educator, I always look foreword to reading my schools Facebook page and it helps me keep up to date with the hustle and bustle of an elementary school.

https://www.edutopia.org/blog/creating-dynamic-facebook-page-your-school-anne-obrien

OBrien, A.

This resource is the best resource by far that I have come across while researching this topic. In this article/resource, it outlines a collection in handbook form about utilizing Facebook in the classroom. In this handbook for educators, it freely gives you information on what Facebook is, why the guide is written, and how to use this handbook when creating your Facebook pages for either your classroom or for your school. While looking through this resource, I found a really beneficial section that discusses using Facebook in teaching and learning in all different ways from creating private professional learning groups to providing teaching with the digital skills all students need to use in todays world. This is an awesome guide to use when considering building a Facebook page for your classroom and I highly recommend the read to all those contemplating integrating social media into their classroom.

http://www.ednfoundation.org/wp-content/uploads/Facebookguideforeducators.pdf

FACEBOOK GUIDE FOR EDUCATORS - The Education Foundation.

In this article, it discusses using social media for parent communication. As an educator, this is my biggest issues is getting information to parents and communicating effectively but without having to go through students communication is sometimes tough. This article describes how it is important to include social media when thinking about parental communication and gives insight about using all different forms of social media to achieve that clear communication. Under the Facebook section, this article describes how you can use your classroom page to share all kinds of information with parents and what to include on that page. Also included, are helpful hints to keep in mind such as being professional, keeping the focus of information on teaching and learning, using a picture of your class mascot to help protect identities, and many other important strategies to keep in mind while creating a classroom Facebook page. I believe this article will be very useful for those educators just beginning using Facebook in the classroom.

http://www.educationworld.com/a_curr/stenhouse/classroom-communication-social-media-tips.shtml

Parent Communication: Using Social Media.

In this article, it talks about how Facebook joins with other tech firs to create free educational tools to use within the classroom. This article goes on to describe how using the "Personalized Learning Plan" Lets students track their school work, grades, and other skills to meet the students own individual needs. Also within this article, it talks about how using Facebook will allow these learning tools to be free and will foster the growth of a digital generation. This article was very interesting as an educator and is something that sparks my interests. Skype can be used in the language classroom to explain examples in a safe setting. Sometimes students do not feel as comfortable in front of the classroom speaking in a second language so using Skype to share what they have learned with a stranger may be easier for them. Skype also allows you to share your screen to work collaboratively in groups. http://blog.princippia.com/2013/05/skype-en-el-aula-algo-mas-que-una.html

It includes links to reviews left by real classroom teachers and their experiences in the classroom using Skype. This resource was very helpful to me because it also name the obstacles faced in a classroom of language learners.Whereas a lot of students have no problem with the reading and writing of the language but struggle with speaking and listening. It also speaks about PAMELA which is an app within Skype that allows the student to record themselves speaking and upload it to a podcast or to a blog where the teacher can easily evaluate their work.

https://ddd.uab.cat/pub/dim/16993748n15/16993748n15a2.pdf

It does this by including graphics that explain how high anxiety can lead to low receptiveness and learning. It explains the simplicity of the application. One area that stood out was using Skype in a theater setting by having the students sit in front of the camera and speak to another class as a whole instead of one by one. This is especially helpful if there aren’t enough computers to go around. http://files.eric.ed.gov/fulltext/ED511316.pdf

This article talks about using technology within project-based learning. I love how this article talked about not doing a specific project just to use a piece of technology, instead, use technology because it helps meet project goals. It should enhance the project-based learning instead of take the place of it. One of the teachers goals is to help students decide what role technology will play. If students are needing to contact each other outside of school, they may want to use a Wiki or Google Apps. If students are needing outside help, they may want to interview others over Skype.

http://www.p21.org/news-events/p21blog/1105-integrating-technology-with-pbl-keep-the-end-in-mind#/publisher/biepbl

This particular article supports using PBL’s in the classroom because of research-based data. The data shows higher student engagement and higher performance on standardized testing. One way to ensure that your PBL will be as successful as the ones used to gather this data would be to follow many of the steps given in this article. A huge part of having a successful PBL is the technology integration. I love how this article summed up that technology is at its best when it doesn’t just take the place of something already possible, but goes beyond. Technology integration through PBL’s is easy by using Google Apps in Education. I can see myself using this tool for my first PBL so that students, teacher, and parents all know where to look for information, feedback, and grades.

https://www.edutopia.org/stw-project-based-learning-best-practices-new-tech-research

I love how this article talks about how using more technology is not the answer to a better PBL, it’s using technology more intentionally and for a specific purpose. I really liked this articles idea of getting an authentic audience for your PBL. Skype in people who would really care about this project, or share it with them via Google Drive to get feedback throughout the project. This article also talked about using technology to store information and build a project, both things that are able to be done on Edmodo. I love both of these ideas and could see myself using them in my classroom.

https://www.edutopia.org/blog/technology-improve-PBL-andrew-miller

This source gave a few other examples of how to use tech within a PBL. Skyping in someone as an audience was mentioned again but also using Youtube, TedTalks, and Google Hangouts at the beginning of the project to get students engaged and asking questions was another idea. Also, I found it interesting that it was telling teachers an idea on a way to give feedback to students after a PBL would be to use Screencast-O-Matic to video feedback to the group! THese are all things I could do within my own room that wouldn't be too hard to implement.

http://www.p21.org/news-events/p21blog/1832-blending-technology-into-project-based-learning
