Jane Austen's literary debut, Sense and Sensibility, was published in 1811. With the same publisher, Thomas Egerton, Pride and Prejudice, the latest revision of First Impressions, was published in January 1813. The novel was immediately very well received and a second edition was printed in October of the same year. In 1812 he began drafting Mansfield Park, finished and published in 1814, all copies were sold within six months.

Among the various hypotheses the most accredited is that Austen had been affected by Addison's disease, at that time incurable; in 1817 her sister Cassandra took her to Winchester, in search of adequate care, but in that city Jane Austen died and was buried in the cathedral.
