It recalls to my mind the age old argument about nature vs nurture. Are we born with talent/intelligence/ability? Or do we develop this over time.

I have always thought that intelligence implied a more biological meaning. Like, all humans and creatures with brains and functioning capabilities of adapting to their environment and learning from it are intelligent. Monkeys are intelligent. Rats are intelligent. And humans are superiorly intelligent (in my biased opinion-- giggle haha).

Einstein was intelligent, is what I always think. But I also remember that Einstein's mother was told that he would never really amount to much. I bet whoever said that would have been surprised.

I always took to the words of Shinichi Suzuki, founder of the suzuki music education method. He always said that the nurturing of ability was more important than one's genetics. He said, Chinese babies don't speak German. They speak Chinese, because that is their environment.

Neither did my dad. But I know that her years of self study have done a lot for her, and she has not let her mind waste away.

I have known my share of autistic people.
The first I knew was my cousin. He was severely autistic, and would bite people. We used to babysit him. He was very intelligent when it came to getting what he wanted. Especially where food was involved.
I knew another disabled person. His name was Andrew, and he was our neighbor. He had an accident in his early life, and so he was mentally disabled. But he could still hold a polite conversation, and be mannerly. He always said please and thank you, and his mom said it was only because she trained him to be that way. He used to bite too. We liked Andrew a lot. We watched barney together. :)
I am not sure what that has to do with this...
