Fictional Character: James Bond

Due to his confidence in his profession and his ability to complete tasks with ease, James Bond embodies the concept of self-reliance. He shows off his abilities by leaping out of planes at random to exhibit his competence in making an entrance while visiting a new location, speaking numerous complex languages to connect with foreign leaders, and always winning at poker. Bond does not abandon his missions because, as Emerson writes, "a man must be a nonconformist." Bond is a diligent worker who strives for success in every film because he serves as a role model for society on how to deal with difficult obstacles, in this case, life-threatening adventures that he must face in order to complete the mission he has been given. As Emerson points out, "Nothing can bring you peace but yourself. Nothing can bring you peace but the triumph of principles", and Bond shows how his fighting ability pays off because he is always a hero in the eyes of others, which is one of his greatest pleasures as a conscientious man.

Song: Titanium - David Guetta

This song depicts the notion of overcoming difficult periods in life that appear overwhelming. Many historical figures were misinterpreted while communicating their theories, discoveries, or beliefs to society, according to Emerson. Emerson states that "Pythagoras was misunderstood, and Socrates, and Jesus, and Luther, and Copernicus, and Galileo, and Newton... To be great is to be misunderstood". This exemplifies the philosophy of being more than just meeting society's stereotyped standards. Being clever entails being innovative in the creation of one's own thoughts. Society is self-centered; everyone strives to outperform one another. The song says, "You shoot me down, but I won't fall, I'm titanium," indicating the capacity to not listen to what others have to say in terms of being negative about someone with brilliant ideas or being authentic. Emerson asserts that "Society everywhere is in a conspiracy against the manhood of every one of its members", which resonates with the song since it is about being strong enough to not care what others think. "I'm bulletproof, nothing to lose, Fire away, fire away," the lyrics say, emphasizing that threats are useless to self-sufficient people.

Misunderstood Person: Martin Luther King

Martin Luther King was a historic figure who battled for African American equality. He was scrutinized and misunderstood at the time because of the racial division which led to extreme racism against colored individuals. He took part in the nonviolent civil rights movement to demonstrate his self-reliance. During the 1960s, King campaigned until reforms in the society were made in response to widespread inequality. Emerson discusses the concept of free speech, stating that, "speak what you think today in words as hard as cannonballs", regardless of what others think or believe is correct according to society's ignorant ideas which influence the majority of perspectives. "To be great is to be misunderstood," Emerson says, and this certainly ties with King since he was a great man with big goals of making the world a more inclusive place filled with mutual respect. Emerson's thoughts and King's views about standing up to encourage social change are related since both men believe in speaking one's mind without fear of opposing opinions.

Chris McCandless embodies these principles

Chris McCandless embraces these ideas since he didn't care what people thought of him while he went through numerous risky situations to feel completely free. McCandless sought ultimate serenity and lived in the woods to separate himself from the rest of the world. McCandless was a proponent of going to whatever length to genuinely experience the joy of being alone in a world devoid of people and technology, which led to a life immersed in the environment. Emerson and McCandless have a connection since they both believe that "loves not realities and creators, but names and customs," and that rather than looking at how the world is, it is much better to construct your own universe and tailor each component according to each individual. For McCandless, it was vital to live alone somewhere in the natural setting without any sort of communication; this provided him with complete calmness. Emerson also emphasizes that "Nothing can bring you peace but yourself", which perfectly correlates with the notion of McCandless' voyage, which led to odd experiences throughout the world to test out the many settings to achieve absolute contentment. McCandless encountered a "power which resides in him is new in nature", as Emerson puts it, which led to the long adventures McCandless lived through internationally in order to be free of being confined in a culture with which he did not completely agree. McCandles appreciated feeling isolated, therefore he developed a drive to increase the amount of risk in his environment, which ultimately led to his death.
