McCandless sought ultimate serenity and lived in the woods to separate himself from the rest of the world. McCandless was a proponent of going to whatever length to genuinely experience the joy of being alone in a world devoid of people and technology, which led to a life immersed in the environment. Emerson and McCandless have a connection since they both believe that "loves not realities and creators, but names and customs," and that rather than looking at how the world is, it is much better to construct your own universe and tailor each component according to each individual. For McCandless, it was vital to live alone somewhere in the natural setting without any sort of communication; this provided him with complete calmness. Emerson also emphasizes that "Nothing can bring you peace but yourself", which perfectly correlates with the notion of McCandless' voyage, which led to odd experiences throughout the world to test out the many settings to achieve absolute contentment. McCandless encountered a "power which resides in him is new in nature", as Emerson puts it, which led to the long adventures McCandless lived through internationally in order to be free of being confined in a culture with which he did not completely agree.
