I was shocked to know that once kidney failure happens, it is irreversible. We can only delay its progression (5 stages of kidney failure) by improving our diet and taking medication for the rest of our lives. Dialysis patients also have a very strict diet. Their water intake (inclusive of water from soups or fruits) per day is capped at 1 litre! It made me reflect on how I’ve taken certain blessings in life for granted. Being able to drink plain water is a privilege for these patients. Health is truly wealth. Thus, I will really try my best to not just take care of my diet but also that of my family’s.

Patients endure a lot of emotional and mental burden having to attend dialysis 3 times a week for 4 to 5 hrs a day, for the rest of their lives. Mdm Siti, a current patient and volunteer, showed how a positive mindset is half the battle won when going through their journey as a dialysis patient.

I always thought that kidney failure was only due to excessive salt intake but today I learnt that it can also be due to the sugar intake as well. Do not take security for granted. Data is now more valuable than gold! Which explains the high and tight security in data centres. Data centres are responsible for the data security of their clients, hence they face immense pressure to ensure that the servers are always running. Wow, without these data centres big or small companies would not survive. The security of the companies is well taken care by data centres. The building ensures the security of datas being transferred. The data centre also offers many different jobs from customer service to Engineers. Alan, Engineering Director, shared a lot about Global switch and how it plays a big part in Singapore and Globally. Many people question is that why Singapore why not other countries to set up data centre. He shared our position, political stability and security in Singapore is one of the best. I also learnt about submarine cables which travel underground from different countries to Singapore and then from Singapore to other countries. Data centres ensures our daily usage of internet is safe.

I really enjoy the rich learning during the NKF sharing and tour. I understand better the process and struggles of dialysis patients, having a few close family members with the issue. A really eye-opening experience on so many fronts. The trip was a wake-up call for me to embrace a more healthy lifestyle. It also presents me with the opportunity to better understand the different treatment options available and the resources we can tap into to support kidney patients. The highlight for me was the sharing by Mdm Siti, a current patient, who exudes so much positivity that it gave me a different outlook to my difficulties and challenges. Very informative session about the stages of kidney disease/failure and the 3 treatment options for patients. One fact learnt is that patients can do peritoneal dialysis at home while sleeping (9pm-5am) or every 4-5h in 40min sessions.

Mdm Siti, a dialysis patient, shared her story on how she ended up with kidney failure and urged all of us to lead healthy lifestyles and make good choices. Though she has to undergo dialysis three times a week, she maintains a positive outlook on life and has formed a community of exercise buddies among the dialysis patients. Wonderful and insightful sharing :)

Air traffic controllers need to have a resilient mind that can stay calm in highly stressful situations, and will need to be able to make quick decisions to ensure the safety of hundreds of passengers.
Using newer techology such as touch screens and 360° simulators to give trainees a higher quality training sessions, which in turn trains them better to be on the ground.

This was an eye-opening experience into the aviation industry. Of course, the main highlight was the simulator where teachers were all captivated by not only the technology, but also how life-like the simulator was. The facilitators spoke with so much passion and conviction, and was very inspiring to see that they are so motivated in their work. It was also interesting to know that what being an air traffic controller entails and what they training is like. It was an enjoyable learning journey and I found it meaningful and memorable.

Important takeaway

Entry requirements: A levels. We all can qualify if we are considering. Individual’s skill sets may not be relevant, but we can if we want to.

Attending the Singapore Aviation Academy was a truly eye-opening experience. Learning about how they use advanced technology and realistic mock-ups to simulate air control stations at Changi Airport was fascinating. It's impressive to see how they are preparing students for real-world scenarios in such a hands-on way.

The emphasis on passion and resilience in their selection process really stood out to me. It made me realize the importance of dedication and perseverance in the aviation industry.

This was a really great learning experience for me as it’s a rare opportunity to be able to have an LJ in the area of aviation. ATC is a highly specialised (and stressful) job (with high attrition rate), they don’t need any specific subjects/ course as a prerequisite, just a lot of spatial awareness and the ability to remain composed under pressure as they are “building roads in the sky” 😊 Those interested in aviation can also explore other areas (can check out CAAS scholarships as well)!

It is a very enjoyable and meaningful experience with the CAAS hosts through their insightful and humorous sharing. It was an enriching trip to SAA. With about ten air traffic controllers in the control tower, they are able to control 35 aircarfts in an hour per runaway. The controller who holds the stressful post will be given a break after two hours. Mental health is important as they need to make quick and sound decisions. 👍

Thanks for organising such an interesting LJ! Definitely memorable :) we learnt that while the requirement is just A Levels, the pool of people who make it is extremely selective! Only about 7 a year. Also, the job requires intense focus and ability to multitask under a lot pressure because you are literally responsible for hundreds of lives each time. Hence, they work in max two hour shifts. We also got to experience a simulator of the control tower and that controllers have to work closely in teams.

The LJ to SAA was truly a rare opportunity to gain insight into the job of an air traffic controller. I learnt that there are 3 different categories - aerodrome, approach, area controllers, each with different responsibilities. The job is also highly demanding on the mind, resulting in ATCs working for a maximum of 2 hours before they are required to take a break. It was also great to have the chance to ask questions to professionals working in the industry about the requirements needed to pursue a career in this field, e.g. playing games (often seen as a waste of time) actually contributes to building the soft skills needed for this job such as multi-tasking and speedy reaction time!

This visit to SAA allows me to learn what it takes to be an ATC, the soft skills that they require to possess and the equipment that they have on hand to train future ATCs. The 360 simulator that replicates the look of the Changi Airport controller is impressive, and the details that go in to conjure scenarios that test trainees is surprising. The recurring emphasis on use of correct phraseology to get common understanding with non-EL speaking pilots is very reminiscent of our use of specific keywords to denote our questions

information is power and money especially in the digital age. The presenter puts it very well: the data stored is very very valuable. Things like your credit card information, bank details and probably some medical records as well. A data centre has them all and it is paramount that it is secure and electricity supplied must not be interrupted. I am genuinely surprised by the amount of security in place.

There are many jobs available in a data centre and I try interest my students in its career path.

The exhibition was great as it showcased the various treatments for kidney patients and allowed us to better understand how the lifestyle of a kidney patient has to changed. I didn't know the existence of LYF co-living accommodations which is like a university hostel concept. I was amazed to hear the rent was only $135 per month!

I also learnt that the government is supportive of Local Start-Ups by offering a cheaper space and rental (if the company is less than 7 years old). Good opportunity for entrepreneurs!

The first thing that amazes me was the amount of effort, expertise and technicality that goes into providing online data support. As a layman user, I simply just run my app, without pay attention to the amount of work that needs to be done behind the scene to make it happen. Just pure amazement at how far technology has progressed to provide us with such services.

The second learning was how Alan stressed on how the management of data could only be accomplished with expertise from various different individuals, each with their own skills and knowledge. Even though it is an IT firm managing Internet data, they still need a diversified staff to make it happen, human resource, security, engineers, programmers etc. This exemplifies the fact that we are only able achieve more if we are able to harness the collective strength of various individuals effectively. Much like our school, the various teachers and KPs each have our own strengths, weaknesses, skills and expertise that we all contribute towards making our school even better.

It was quite interesting to know that there is a safe space for the local start ups to explore, discover, network and learn from other start ups and see which strategy best suits the company. It was also nice to see how they encouraged these startups by placing either prototypes or working products around one-north. I have always seen one north as a place of offices and research labs. But the LJ made me see and learn many new things every step of the tour.

I had an eye-opening experience from our visit to One-North and Monster Tours. Having gone for a walking tour once abroad, I never thought it was a possibility in Singapore. The English teacher in me was so excited to incorporate this into lessons teaching Situational/ Continuous Writing because I firmly believe students would enjoy having some sort of say in proposing which parts of Singapore is best to visit for a fictitious 'Instagram Tour' or 'Food on a Budget' Tour!
