Interesting idea that knowing THAT is different from knowing HOW. Maybe this is why we can remember how to do something

(like playing the piano or biking) but can easily forget facts/information

My great uncle is a neurologist in Denver and he explained that it is still unknown what causes the synapses, or electrical shocks, that form memory. I wonder if the strong impression of an event is what causes the memory because you tend to remember more important things in one event rather than all the details.

I think the reason you can't remember things that happened a short time ago but you can remember things long-term is because your hippocampus and other memory processing parts of your brain are still processing the synapses and forming the memory.
