In this self-map i decided to focus on the translink rail service map. this was done to localize the viewer to brisbane (indicates that I'm from/live in Brisbane) and illustrate the mobility offered by translink services. I was initially drawn to this map because i thought that the colours/simple geometric shapes had an ‘art deco’ like feel. in this piece I wanted to combine the art deco, russian constructivism and nouvelle art style. the product i think more resembles an art deco approach. this being because of the generally simple geometric shapes used in its construction, as well as the small palette of colours used. however, a nouvelle approach is apparent with the translink map – an organic approach can be viewed with the train lines. the colours are also brighter and visually more eye catching. constructivism is apparent in the works ‘poster’ like feel, the figure being constructed similarly to existing examples used in Russian posters during the 1920s. in retrospect, i think it would have been beneficial to tone down the colours of the translink map as they strongly contrast the colours used in the visually imagery.
