She is stuck in a time loop that keeps repeating one of the worst days of her life. We as the audience are thrown into her struggles as she manages different ways to try to change the negative day into a positive day. 
We are suppose to imagine ourselves in her shoes and try to think about how we would try to restart time like normal. How we would redo the day to make it better. As the day progressed, more and more events started to turn her supposedly perfect day into the worst day. She started feeling helpless, and heart broken after finding out about Josh cheating, her dad moving away, and to top it all off? A program she thought she got into- ended up cutting her due to technicalities. She felt like her life was pointless. 
As she restarted the day, she felt confused, and lost. The next couple times the day restarted, she started to try her best to make the day perfect. She went over all the possibilities and tried them all out- until she got the perfect day. She was so hopeful after she had the perfect day, that the next day should continue. 
She was devastated to find out that her perfect day did not solve the groundhog day situation she was in. She desperately needed the paper perfect life. She didn't get that, so she went off the rails, tired of being perfect. Em was incredibly tired of confirming to the rules, so she had a no consequence day. One of the most important messages that she is trying to convey is to her boyfriend- Josh. Em had caught Josh cheating by kissing another girl. Em then tries to communicate that she loves him- and tries to keep him in love with her so he doesn't have a chance to even think about cheating. 
Another important person she has a problem trying to communicate with is her dad. Her dad is taking his new family and moving to Texas- without even considering her feelings. He assumes that she just wants to stay behind, when she actually tries to tell him that she wants to live with them also. Not full time, but she wants to live with both her mom and dad. 
The third most important person she has been communicating with is her Lab Partner Nick. She has been spending every single day with Nick- even if he doesn't remember each moment, she does. Wake up in the morning, go to shower and argue with her step sibling about the shower. 
Eat breakfast with step mom and siblings. 
Go to school in car, but crash into Nick. 
Get a ride to school with Nick. 
Get called into the guidance office to be told about the program technicality rejecting her. 
Goes to see boyfriend in the parking lot, but instead watches him cheat on her. 
Go back home to receive the new of being abandoned by her dad.
