She states "is a struggle that occurs when individuals perceive that those others are interfering with their goal attainment" (Page 212). Meaning for special education that conflict is when two sides who have the same goal do not think the other person is helping reach that goal appropriately. This is also how conflict happens. Two sides of a situation do not see or think the other side is understanding it their way. This will occur a lot in schools because of the HUGE movement to collaboration. Conflict cannot be avoided because of this. Not to mention so many different people from different backgrounds at schools. You cannot avoid it.

BASIS for successful collaboration! It is when you are in constant communication with everyone on the team! Meaning you will need to work hard at always updating everyone and making sure an accurate perception and intercultural awareness is happening for you. This completing lowers conflicts just by making sure you talk to people. You can do this in your job everyday by emailing the team and parents about the student. It is like the parents I interviewed.

She explained that there was never much conflict because the teacher always listened to what she had to say and asked her for help with her son. For example the teacher could not get Barbara's son to do the one minute reading mazes. So instead of fighting with the child she emailed Barbara asking for help to get him to do the reading. Barbara loved it. All Barbara wanted was to know someone was helping her son and her opinion mattered.

Yes! The Idaho state manual for special education states if the court says each parent has custody (get a document from the court first) then each parent has rights like a normal parent. Which can cause a lot of problems if they disagree. This is where you will want to DOCUMENT DOCUMENT DOCUMENT. Make sure both parents are involved and when they disagree do not be afraid to ask someone smarter and do not forget that IDEA is key. The manual even states: " When parents who have joint legal custody give conflicting instructions, the district’s obligation is to inform the parents that any action proposed or refused will be based on the needs of the student and in accordance with the IDEA requirements. Both the district and either parent have options under the IDEA to resolve disagreements, including SDE Dispute Resolution processes such as mediation and due process hearings. " On page 171 it continues that if parents disagree with consent " When parents, both with legal authority to make educational decisions for their child, disagree on the revocation of consent for special education and related services, one parent may revoke consent for his or her child’s receipt of special education and related services at any time. The district must accept either parent’s revocation of consent, and provide written notice to the parents. After revoking consent, a parent maintains the right to subsequently request an initial evaluation which must be treated as an initial evaluation and not a re-evaluation for special education. A parent who disagrees with another parent regarding revocation of special education services is not entitled to resolve the dispute through an IDEA due process hearing. " In short I believe documenting and asking people smarter aka more collaboration is VERY important here as well as what is best for the student.

Yes I do! As well as research to back it up! So according to a study done by Kamau Oginga Siwatu and Tehia V. Starker back in 2010 got pre-service teachers together and gave them culturally sensitive special education situations and said how would you solve the conflict and did they feel prepared. They found " Pre- teachers' sense of preparedness and the strength of their culturally responsive teaching self-efficacy beliefs contribute to the prediction of their sense of efficacy to resolve the conflict presented in the case study." Meaning most pre-service teachers believed they could handle the situation because they were taught about different backgrounds. Meaning if you understand and know someones different backgrounds then you are able to help with the conflict. For example Leah Thayer an ex-special education teacher who now works with GT students told a story to me about a Muslim family she worked with. She would have to have everything done a week early for the meeting to send to the principal because he would be presenting it to the family because he was male. Knowing this about the family and having the principal run the meeting allowed for the best things to happen for the student because there was no culture conflict occurring because of her knowledge.

You are so right. The hard part about implementing conflict resolution guidelines is that is not how some people argue. For example the teacher Leah I was talking about earlier was also telling me how crazy teaching is! She had guidelines to follow for conflict and was following them because she had complaints with her co-teacher. Instead of following it too the co-teacher started trying to turn the students against her. Talk about a challenge! I wish people would all just agree on rules and there was no conflict!

Wow homie! Did you not remember reading everything from the SPED manual I sent you quotes from again IDEA process is facilitation, informal conflict resolution, mediation, state complaints, due process hearings, and expedited due process hearings. But most of the time when there is an IDEA conflict a mediator is brought in to help because they know the law.

Oh my gosh you are right. How could I not remember. I feel so ready for my first day tomorrow. I have different conflict resolutions I plan to use to help everyone. I plan on being overly communicative and make sure everyone is on the same page by sending daily emails. I plan to listen and accommodate to the best of my abilities for each person. With my ultimate goal of being what is best for the student. I also cannot wait to use my knowledge of IDEA conflict if needed. I believes though I have so much more to learn about culture but will not learn it until it happens sometimes. But I feel like in the field I am going to do great by knowing these things! Hey thank you again and you had amazing sources of information to share! Can you please send me them in APA format so I can use them to reference again and again?
