She lives in a small suburban town with her oppressive mother. A lonely woman who's obsessed with beauty -- she even goes as far as offering Panny plastic surgery for her 14th birthday -- and her uncle Lefty who plays the role of her father. Lefty is a kind but timid man who works as a security guard. As panny deals with her feelings of boredom and isolation, young blond girls are suspiciously disappearing from her school. Panny feels no connection to the missing girls, who are all blond, white, and popular. Panny feels too ugly and too asian for her small, white, town. She has a best friend named Nancy, who is distracted by her boyfriend and job at the local Walgreens. Panny soon finds her companionship with Hugo, a local college student she finds after accidentally dialing his number. She also writes letters back and forth from her friend Hae-Yoon, another asian girl who's super curious about the American life. Her uncle Lefty meets a middle-aged, African American woman who works in a clothing store. They soon hit it off and decide to become closer and move in together. Isabel on the other hand, is about as desperate as they come. She fantasizes about another life where she's fallen in love with The General. Panny and Isabel need me, obviously more Panny than Isabel, but I really can't leave her by herself. Like I said, I love you more than you'll ever know. Maybe sometime in the future we can try and work things out for the both of us, but until then, I think it's best we live our separate lives.
