A squadron of American B-26 bombers painted to look like stolen Cuban aircraft took off from Nicaragua on April 15, 1961, carrying a number of exiled Cubans. The Bay of Pigs, a remote area on the island's southern shore, was where the Cuban exile brigade launched their invasion on April 17. However, the invasion was a failure. As the exiles' ships approached the coast, unanticipated coral reefs sank part of them, and replacement paratroopers landed in the incorrect spot. After less than a day of fighting, the invaders submitted to Castro's men after being cornered down on the shore. 114 people were slain and more than 1,100 were captured.
