This photo stands as proof of the progress made in terms of social change and gender inclusivity. Today, women are no longer as confined by traditional gender roles, now able to empower themselves with the pursuit of education and professional advancement. Such success conveys breaking through from past normatives of the patriarchal structures that once left women restricted, unable to access education and other opportunities for personal and professional fulfillment. Women now have the ability to assert their own agency and make their way in academia. The photo allows for celebration of the achievements of women and as motivation to endure and work to break past other patriarchal barriers which constrict women and hinder gender equality.

In comparison to other teaching positions in highschool, middle school, etc, a professor is a teaching role that is considered more distinguished. In line with the notion is also how the role is often associated with expertise as well as emotional detachment, characteristics both linked to masculinity. Vice versa, those teaching in lower levels of education are expected to be more nurturing and emotionally available, traits associated with femininity. Such can be said to reflect gendered labor and occupational segregation. There is a need to deconstruct and dismantle such ingrained traditional notions of gender roles within academia and beyond.

With that said, this image is a reflection of heteronormativity which our patriarchal society promotes. It also works within binary gender assumptions and reinforces the assumptions of binary thinking, marginalizing individuals whose gender identity does not align within such a system. On my walks back from campus, I always feel the need to be aware of my surroundings, who is behind and in front of me, etc, a cautiousness which only increases during the nighttime. This need to always be aware is a shared experience for women but one which can vary depending on intersecting factors such as one’s race, sexuality, etc. Such differing realities stem from norms which root from our patriarchal system which has allowed for the internalization of certain values which makes it justifiable to commit gendered violence.]]> 2024-05-20 03:56:16 UTC https://padlet.com/cconw003/zx5qdx6z9b87b5me/wish/2999482513 A board on what is and isn't okay in the workplace cconw003 https://padlet.com/cconw003/zx5qdx6z9b87b5me/wish/2999583205 This photo works to convey the progress made in terms of what is and is not appropriate to occur in the workplace and how work still needs to be done. Such fliers which convey the illegality of discrimination and harassment work to prove that there has been a collective acknowledgement of unacceptable behavior and tangible steps have been made, a departure from where such was ignored and normalized. These fliers also show that this conversation is still being had and that there are efforts still being made to address issues of discrimination against race, sex, etc, that still persist today. Commitments have been made and are still being made to foster equitable work environments which challenge systemic inequalities and in turn promote social justice.
