Tonight, students were given their first Writing Homework Assignment. Students have 1 page of choice writing due in class on Friday morning. We reviewed this in class and encourage students to do a little bit of writing across the week when they have time, rather than leave the entire page for one night (we know how busy life can be!). This is to be completed in their Writer’s notebook, which should also be transferred back and forth between school and home each day.

In class today, we learned that writers revise their beginnings to make their pieces stronger. We tried out new leads using crafts such as dialogue, action and describing the setting.

We are so proud of all the hard work our third graders put in with these brand new math ideas in the first months of school, and want to highlight their efforts as we share their assessments with you. This assessment, which was administered at the end of Module 1, dealt with concepts related to multiplication and division, including more challenging concepts such as the commutative and distributive properties. The assessment contained multiple written problems and a timed fluency portion. It is important to note that at this point in the year, students are not expected to complete all 40 questions within the 3 minute time period. Keeping this in mind, it does provide useful information as to the facts your child has mastered and those that require more practice! As a reminder, all third graders are expected to know their multiplication/ division facts with factors 0-10 by June of 3rd grade.  Please review the assessment and return to school by Tuesday October 22nd. We hope this log will help students push themselves toward reading more books by setting goals for each month and making the logging process a bit less laborious. When students start a new book, they should write the title in the appropriate box, along with how many minutes they read in school and at home. Each day after that, they simply record the minutes read in class and for homework. When they finish a book, they make a check mark. When they begin a new book, they write the title and begin the process over again. A friendly reminder that at this point in the year, students should aim to read between 2 and 4 just-right books each week. While reading is not required on weekends, we encourage students to log the leisurely reading they do at home to get a true sense of how much they are reading throughout the month. It is sure to be a fun day in 3-305. We will have a small exchange in the afternoon.  If your child would like to bring valentines, please keep the following in mind:
- We have 31 students (and 3 teachers- ha!) and we ask that if you choose to send, you bring enough for all students
- Please do not write names on individual valentines as this makes the exchange difficult to organize 
- PS 40 asks that children bring in a non- candy valentine to celebrate. Some great ideas are pencils or bookmarks. Of course, nothing beats a simple, homemade card as well! Traditional paper valentines are also lovely :)

Hi families! So nice chatting with so many of you this evening. There has been some interest expressed in how students who are interested can receive some extra practice with testing skills. While we want to assure everyone that we feel the kids are working very hard in school and are well-prepared to do their best with current in-school assignments and homework, we are providing some extra practice pages below from our Ready Workbooks:

Students who are interested can rip out pages in class or bring their workbook back and forth from school (keeping in mind we use the books daily and it is important we have them in school each day!) A reminder that this is OPTIONAL :)
