Consuelo
International lunch
Today we had the first session of the course "a classroom with a door to the world" in Guadeloupe. Several activities have been carried out in a spectacular place, Bois Jolan beach. I would highlight the moment of the lunch. It has been an international lunch because each participant has contributed typical foods from their country. From Spain we have brought Serrano ham, Iberian loin, Iberian chorizo, Iberian salchichón, cured cheese, typical dates from Elche and turrón from Alicante. It has been a very pleasant moment of conviviality and of knowing different foods and drinks of the world.

Today I had the opportunity to know my course mates. All of us joined to this fabulous course because we like to improve our internationalisation (such a big word!!) And I also have known more about how to match my national identity with a global minded. It has been an incredible day.
Thanks so much Rita!

LTE = we are learning through experience. That suits me very well, because sitting and reading is not easy for me. I learn much better studying cultures by experiencing them. As teachers we need to have perspective.
When you work with children and students and build a link with them to another country, your pupils learn in a very easy way for example about traditions both in there town twinning but also in there own country.

First, believe in yourself. From that belief grows identity. You have to know where your roots are. After that you will get a feeling and knowledge that you belong to a bigger group, and the national identity starts to grow in you.

Today I have seen again a classroom without walls, where you feel the wind, you smell the sea and feel the sand between your fingers. In the midst of nature we have shared experiences, sensations and we have known each other a little more. We have talked about our IDENTITY, what characterizes us, and we have enjoyed a delicious snack in which each one has contributed typical food of their country. Between bath and bath, in the breaks we have been able to enjoy that turquoise Caribbean sea. The day has ended with laughter with some French lessons. Full day where there are!

Beside the fact that I get to know my course mates and parts of their identity a little bit closer, I learned that one’s identity undergoes steady changes due to experiences but there are also parts of one’s identity that won’t change the whole life. Although we all have our own identity it is a mix out of traits we share with many other people in the world. What makes each of us unique is how we merge them together. But as it is a combination of many traits our identity gives us the opportunity to link to many other people in the world and find something we have in common and therefore a chance to create affinity or build bridges between different cultures.

I feel it is rather difficult for me to sum up in a few words what I've learnt today. Rita mentioned a citation (but I have forgotten who it's from) that I think is very true: "If I had more time I would write a shorter answer." Learning in a very different (and stunning) environment was very interesting and motivating. The fact and the goal that we all contribute to what is happening with all our different cultures, language backgrounds, opinions, thoughts, experiences etc is a great thing. I've always been fascinated by the idea of constructivism that we are kind of a mosaic of our experiences with and by the people we have met so far... Having the chance to see my own culture (whatever mix might be - German-European...?) and myself in the mirror of a very different culture, along with a group of very different people, that is a great opportunity!
