Hi, I’m Joy! My interests in Philippine Pop Culture lie mainly in entertainment. Music, TV Shows and Movies are very interesting to me. These classic forms of media are well-ingrained in our culture, with their styles and words becoming part of our day-to-day lives. Local sports and fanaticism for local teams and athletes are also interesting to me. Athletes become celebrities in their own right and are highly revered within their respective spheres. I am also very interested in the social media aspect of Philippine Pop culture as they reflect what is popular and very “in” with the masses these days.

Filipino social media influencers are particularly interesting because I think their popularity is an amalgamation of the older forms of pop culture. Some showcase a lot more of traditional Filipino values while others show more modern takes on society. The appeal of being “genuine” and “relatable” is an overarching theme among these influencers, while showing a lifestyle that is not very easily attainable. Some popular creators that most people know are the Sky Fam (Slater Young, Kryz Uy and children), Small Laude, Team Payaman and Mimiyuuuh. These influencers and content creators become so popular and have such dedicated fanbases.

Social media influencers are a relatively new concept. With the advent of video-sharing platforms and social media, they have become akin to our generation’s A-list celebrities. Their influence comes a lot from social media being so accessible and the influencers themselves being accessible to their audience. Celebrities used to be revered from a distance, since we could only really interact with them through their works and whatever media they may appear on. Influencers have a direct way to interact with their audience, strengthening their parasocial relationships with the audience.

Individuals use social media to fulfill their needs of connection and finding something or someone to relate to. With how life has been difficult for Filipinos lately, it is no wonder that seeing these influencers and their lives make people yearn to be like them. They are influenced to do certain things, buy certain things and say certain things that these influencers do because it gives them the sense that they are closer to becoming and having the lives that these influencers have. These influencers feed that need for relatability with seemingly inspirational and uplifting messages, without completely acknowledging their privileges in life. Despite this, influencers become more and more famous today, with more people not just aspiring to have their lifestyles, but to become one themselves.
