Do students retain more knowledge reading non-fiction materials via printed documents or online?

I was unable to investigate/observe this during my case study. However, I would be interested in researching to find out if there is a method (digital or print) that helps students retain non-fiction facts from reading. Knowing what I have learned about sight word acquisition, I presume that printed material would provide students with a higher rate of recall. But, further research would be necessary.

Some had a hard time navigating the application, and some had a hard time recalling the sight words correctly & therefore couldn't complete the activities.

Are students engaged in more complex and in-depth conversations following lessons using technology or traditional methods?

What I learned...
Students are more engaged in conversations following instruction using traditional methods. This may be because they were more likely to have completed the lesson/task whereas when using technology there are outside matters that can delay a student completing an activity (e.g., device error, internet problems, unsure user, etc.).
