Machine guns could be used on the ground or in planes. The reason the machine guns were so useful was because they could injure about 60,000 soldiers per day.

Neither of the groups wanted to leave their trenches so they had to find new ways to battle. They would throw bombs and grenades into enemy trenches, the goal was to wipe out as many of the enemies as possible without leaving their own base.

They used stainless steel in airplane engines and medical tools. Stainless steel was found to be very useful because it wouldn't rust.

In the spring of 1918 large numbers of U.S. troops were arriving on the western front. Clifford Lane had described the arrival of the U.S. troops as helpful. Even the thought of the troops coming helped them fight harder because even though they were running out of their own troops, they had many more U.S. troops coming to help.

They would fly above enemy trenches and take aerial photographs of the entire enemy base. In 1916 air combat began. Using the element of surprise leaders would position themselves above enemy territory before attacking. Aircraft also began assisting ground troops, they would drop bombs, grenades, and shoot machine guns from right above.

One Soldier, Herbert B. Hayden, suffered from the residual effects of shell blasts. He suffered from migraines, memory lapses and horrible nightmares. These were the same problems  over 76,000 veterans were facing after the war the reason for this condition was known as shell shock.
