Pershing, he was one of America's most accomplished generals most famous for serving as commander of the American Expeditionary Force in World War 1. He commanded the American troops and bolstered the spirits of European allies.
     John J. Pershing born Laclede Missouri on September 13, 1860, graduated from North Missouri Normal School, and had a brief career in a one room schoolhouse. Pershing was commissioned in the cavalry in 1886 from the United States Military School, he graduated 30th out of 77. 
     To name the attributes of General Pershing would have to begin with his demand for military bearing, it states in our weekly reading, Great Commanders, edited by Christopher R. Gabel, Ph.D., James H. Willbanks Ph.D. combat Studies Institute Press, US Army Combined Arms Center, Fort Leavenworth Kansas, page 126 first paragraph, failure to attain such discipline will be treated as a lack of capacity on the part of the commander to create in the subordinate that intensity of purpose and willing acceptance of hardship which are necessary to success in battle. General Pershing was never exhibited warmth and common touch, he was a respected and feared commander.
     After graduating from West Point, General Pershing arrived at American West just in time to fight the remaining American Apache bands in Arizona to participate in the last great India Campaign: The Ghost Dance War of 1890.
     General Pershing was serving as a tactical instructor at West Point at the out break of the Spanish American War, his strict enforcement of regulations earned him the nickname "Black Jack" for his previous service with the African American 10th Cavalry. 
     The War Department posted him to the Mindanao in 1899 and Pershing was marked a rising star, in his operations against the Moro warriors Black Jack executed a balanced policy of "Benevolent assimilation" and economic development, willingness to rapidly suppress any challenge American rule or local stability.
     On March 10th 1916 Brigadier General Pershing was directed to cross over the border into Mexico in pursuit of Poncho Villa, and April 29th, 1916 it was reported the Villa had not been captured his bands were spread out and scattered. 
April 1917 America declared war on Germany and Pershing was recalled from Mexico and one of a handful of capable officers who were running for command of AEF. Not only did he win AEF commander he was granted leeway in building and fighting his army. On May 26, 1917 Pershing was granted AEF.

Pershing was a savvy political soldier who had an extensive career, he is considered the most accomplished general in American history, and helped the European Allies defeat the Germans in 1918.
