A bolon house (Batak Toba: Ruma Bolon) is a Northern Sumatra traditional house in Indonesia. Bolon houses are also tourist objects in Northern Sumatra. Bolon houses are made with wood. The house floor is made with boards. The roof is made with rumbia leaves. Bolon houses have no individual rooms, but the space inside is divided. Another unique thing about this Bolon house is the sharp roof. The pointed end at the front is much longer than the rear roof. The Batak people believe that this sharp roof is able to withstand and protect the building from the wind that comes from the direction of the lake. The roof of this traditional Batak house is also used as a place to store heirlooms, so many people think that the roof is a sacred part of the house.
