         <description><![CDATA[<div>12 November 1928<br>Thousands of workers go on strike<br><br>On the 6th of December, Colombian army troops opened fire on a crowd of United Fruit Company workers on strike.  When the fire had subsided, somewhere between 47 and 3,000 men, women, and children had been wounded or killed.  The Colombian Army justified the act by claiming that the strike was organized by communist revolutionaries, while congressman Gaitan claimed that the army had acted under instruction from the United Fruit Company, protected by the United States.</div>]]></description>
