The battery has such a big impact on society today in many ways. First of all, the battery provides many machines, electronics, cars, and many other things we use in our daily life with energy. Batteries help many jobs and tasks. Just think, if a business needed to make a call but there wasn’t a battery to keep the phone going, what would they do? Also, It is necessary to keep batteries around at your house for many reasons also. For an example, if the batteries are dead in the t.v. remote, you can’t use it till you have new ones! But, there is one important thing that batteries are used for that is very important. A car! Cars cannot run without charged batteries and that is the way today that people get around . These are all ways that batteries help people out in their everyday life and their impact society.

Alessandro Volta had a familiar background with science and physics. He became professor of physics at the Royal School of Como in 1774. There were many people who encouraged him to pursue his knowledge. Volta’s friend Luigi Galvani came up with the idea that the contact of two different metals with the muscle of a frog would result in the generation of an electric current. This sparked a lot of ideas for Volta and he wanted to experiment with different things. Volta thought that the frog only made a current that flowed between the two metals, and he called it “metallic electricity.” Then, he started test and experiment with metals alone. He would try to figure out the weak flow of electricity between disks of different metals by placing them on his tongue. He started to find out quickly that animal tissue was not needed to make a current after many experiments.

Volta's first battery was produced in the 1800’s. It was made of alternating disks of zinc and silver. It was separated by paper or cloth soaked in salt water or sodium hydroxide and a source of electric current that did not need to be recharged. When a wire was connected to both ends of the pile, a steady current flowed. He figured out that different metals could change the amount of current made. When he added disks to the stack, the current would increase. His invention and ideas quickly led to a new start of electrical experiments. It was quickly recognized and put into a lot of use.
