3 words on the culture

Manipulating, Controlling, Corruptive

We chose the word manipulating because Eamon twisted Mae's words by forcing her to insinuate ideas like secrets are lies, sharing is caring, and privacy is theft. She herself didn't necessarily say these things, but Eamon took her words and overgeneralized them to his advantage.

The next word we decided on was controlling. Throughout the story, we see how Eamon dominates the discussion and convinces everyone that it is okay to watch over everyone and everything worldwide by putting cameras everywhere.

Finally, the word corruptive was chosen because the circle exhibits corruptive behavior as they brainwash the audience and their employees into their ideals of transparency.

2) In Paragraph 28, May means that she didn't share the fact that she used the kayak. Rather than the act of using the kayak being the crime, in not sharing her actions, she goes against the norms of publicity in the Circle. According to the Circle, by not sharing her actions and the beautiful views of the Blue Island, she was stealing from the public as they say: "PRIVACY IS THEFT"

4)

a) "SECRETS ARE LIES" by keeping secrets, they are withholding information from the public which in the Circle's eye is actively lying.

b) "SHARING IS CARING" In the circle they believe that showing all your information is normalized and when you allow everyone to see your lives, you are sharing you experience for everyone.

c) "PRIVACY IS THEFT" when May doesn't share her trip, Bailey says that she is robbing other people of that experience. By not sharing it, she doesn't allow people who can't experience this to see these view and they believe that she is "robbing them"

Question 4: Sofia and Tiffany

The scene where the phrase, "SECRETS ARE LIES, SHARING IS CARING, and PRIVACY IS THEFT" represents many different messages. For example, when it says "secrets are lies" it exemplifies the Circle's environment where they know everything about their employees. For "sharing is caring" this states that if you truly care about others you should share everything. In the circle, the employees always reveal everything they do with the use of technology, and this is shown as good use. Lastly, when the circle states "Privacy is theft" it shows that keeping information is viewed in this community as a selfish action. This company thinks that keeping information to yourself shouldn't be done because all information should be shared.

Zara And Delilah

3 words to describe the culture of The Circle would be suffocating, because you are trapped in the circle and being watched all the time. Revealing, since all of your life is out in the open, and since. revealing has a positive and negative connotation, it shows how some view it positively and others view it negatively, and it may be seen as enlightening. And dehumanizing, because the circle is taking away the user's right to privacy and normalizing that.

"Secrets are Lies" shows the belief that everything should be out in the open. To advance as a society, nothing should be kept. "Sharing is Caring" means that every piece of information is helpful, and everyone has a right to knowledge and education. Since not everyone has the opportunity to do these things, keeping those personal experiences to yourself is selfish, as they should be shared. "Privacy is Theft" reiterates the message the other two are saying, which is that all information should be available to everyone, and if you don't share its selfish and a crime.

They are cult-like because - they follow the idea that privacy is inherently bad and don't mind it being taken from them.

Manipulative - The conversation between Bailey and Mae is pre-rehearsed which manipulates the audience. They create a narrative that guides the audience to the conclusion of the last three phrases.

Invasive - They believe that every human experience should be public and by not sharing you experience you're robbing other people of your experience.

Meaning of the three phrases

"Secrets are Lies" shows their strong belief that every person's personal life should be accessible to anyone.
