Because of their origins, they have received prejudice resulting in three things assimilation, relocation, or genocide. The Dakota Access Pipeline is an oil pipeline which began construction is 2016. It goes southward all the way down to Patoka, Illinois. This trail have a history of leakage and issues, but it also would run under the territory of the Standing Rock Sioux, a Native American tribe. With about 10,000 inhabitants, the above the Access Pipeline is the Missouri River which serves as their main source of drinking water. The Sioux were joined by many of their supporters and began to protest against the construction and placement of this pipeline. The focus of this issue would be the challenges of the tribe throughout this battle. There are many hardships that can be anticipated if the construction begins there, loss of water source, invasion of sacred land, and the pollution of water and air. The connection is similarities to the situation in Dixie, Cape Town as well as Turkey Creek. To elaborate more, the situation in Cape Town is that the amount of water for use was running out. They were going through a drought and had to ration water. They eventually felt like there was going to be a “Day Zero” which they would run out of water. Similar to this, the Sioux would be in this same predicament if they do not have any drinking water. They would not be able to cook or hydrate themselves leaving them in a food/water crisis. Secondly, the Dumping in Dixie is the placement of hazardous waste facilities strategically placed in the vicinities of lower class or African American neighborhoods. This left them with pollution, low living conditions and discomfort because their income was too little to live elsewhere. The Sioux are similar because the Pipeline has a history of leakages and bursts, Not only would that pollute their water but eventually the air as well. Native Americans were well known to be of low income and without much support. Lastly, Turkey Creek Film explained how the city tried to plan building over their city which to them was considered a Federal Reservation. The tribe draws its water from the river and fears pollution." (AP) The Sioux water source would be cut off due to the water not being able to be used for nutritional or hygienic purposes such as drinking, eating, and showering. Being their only option for water, they would be left with no water dehydrating them and disabling them to complete daily needs.
