First and foremost, motivation is an orientation towards learning. Therefore, it impacts how likely a student is either to give up or push forward, and how thoughtful their reflection on their learning will be. The deeper the motivation for pursuing an activity, the more likely that the student will not accept easy answers to complex questions. In short, intrinsic motivation fosters strong and flexible critical thinking skills. On the other hand, amotivation and purely extrinsic motivation lead to low interest and academic persistence.

Choice is central to effective teaching. Students are interested in exploring many different topics and therefore need to be given ample freedom in their choice of courses, teaching methods, assessments, etc. Students should be given the opportunity to participate in the development of courses, curricula and in their evaluation. It is necessary to consider students as active partners who care about how higher education functions.

True learning is a life-long process. It is not that you read a book, pass an examination, and finish with education. The whole of life, from the moment you are born to the moment you die, is a process of learning.

Jiddu Krishnamurti

Humans have an instinctive need to belong. Evolutionarily, cooperation and group relationships led to an increased level of survival. Maslow felt it was of such importance that he placed belongingness just above physiological and safety needs, in his hierarchy of needs. Since the dawn of our species, there have been things to belong to: families, tribes, countries, religions to name just a few.

A sense of belonging is crucial to our life satisfaction, happiness, mental and physical health and even longevity. It gives us a sense of purpose and meaning. Research has shown that loss of belonging has been associated with stress, illness and decreased wellbeing and depression.
