Great Leaders Continually Strive to be Better

The greatest challenge and threat to any great leader is success. It is important to ask oneself if your success will cause complacency. In order to combat this, all individuals should constantly see how they can improve themselves, their peers, and their communities.

Great leaders tend to find success, not only because they help guide others in good, successful directions, but also because they continually look for new opportunities around them. Three key aspects that nearly all great leaders possess are the following: 1. Great Leaders turn problems into opportunities. 2. Great leaders inspire people to make commitments they would not otherwise make. 3. Great leaders exceed self-interest and self-promotion.

Integrity and Leadership Go Hand-in-Hand

Throughout "Growing Influence" Price and Ennis highlight that in order to become a great, successful leader you must have drive and purpose. Like anything in life, without a purpose, fulfilling and accomplishing tasks seems pointless. In order to develop and expand upon one's purpose, people must learn to lead with logic and follow with emotion. Leading with logic and following with emotion stems from allowing integrity and personal values to direct your behavior.

Integrity in leadership should be implemented through the three "R's". The three "R's" are: rules, results, and relationships. A great leader not only understands what the rules are of their firm, but also chooses to abide by those rules. Secondly, a great leader should measure expected key results. For every position in a company, three to five key results for a specific position should be identified. These results should: plan for success, achieve measurable results, and develop and advance the value a team provides to a company. Lastly, a great leader should manage the relationships that are specifically connected to their job.

Values Define your Success

Personal values are vitally important to one's behavior and success because they guide our actions that directly result in successful or failed situations. Your daily behavior should correlate to your values because your personal values should be of high importance, which in return, should be exemplified in all that you do.

In order to become successful in your long-term goals, you must first become disciplined in your values each and every day. Developing values by which you govern yourself and values by which you relate to others, help train yourself to be intentional and present in every situation which promotes growth. Some examples of values to govern yourself are: peace, courage, curiosity, determination, and contribution. Some examples of values to relate to others are: loyalty, empathy, collaborative, and persuasive.
