Descriptive Task-Assess the Situation

A family and their child (a seventh grader with a disability) would like to return to their "home school" placement for the following school year in a general education setting. They believe this is the correct setting, the LRE and that the current setting, Behavior Horizons, is not the correct setting.

The IEP team is meeting to discuss the students placement for 8th grade and her program planning. The principal has been made aware moments before the meeting that the family is bringing their attorney. While the principal would like to grant this request to have the student back in her home school, the teachers (special education, language arts) have strong (vocal) opinions and thoughts about this. The school psychologist shared that academically the student has made great progress and that it is only in the area of behavior that she is deteriorating. According to the meeting and documentation, there was never a formal FBA or behavior plan prior to the student being sent to Behavior Horizons.

What do we know about Springfield and the resources it has on hand to accommodate the behavioral issues with Carey? Ive only seen input from a school psychologist, no behavioral specialist or any other professionals with this type of knowledge. Is there a specialist of this kind at Horizon school to collab with? I feel that there are important perspectives missing from this IEP meeting....

Supporting Carey in least restrictive environment

Questions:

-What triggers Carey's behavior?

-Could they make a plan to ease her way back in to Springfield school while the do and FBA?

-What supports have they tried at the behavioral school?

-Has she been agressive towards other students?

I feel like in order to provide Carey with the least restrictive environment the school system should exhaust all options at the home school. If they did not complete a proper FBA and BIP before her moving to a different placement, I feel as though it is Carey's right to that process. The school should work to train and support classrooms which she could engage with, so long as she is not posing a risk to herself or other.
