It was a beautiful summer's afternoon of cricket at its absolute best, with Swinbrook securing a spectacular 6-wicket victory. While the competitive edge was sharp, what truly stole the show was the fantastic, warm nature in which the entire game was played—a true credit to both clubs and local grassroots cricket. Having won the toss and elected to field, Swinbrook bowled with great precision. Rafe led the charge with a magnificent spell, finishing with fantastic figures of 3-24. Despite a hard-fought 45 from Shipton’s Finn, Swinbrook's collective fielding effort never wavered, bowling out the visitors for a competitive 175. Chasing 176 is never straightforward, especially with Shipton's opening bowlers delivering a high-quality, testing initial spell. Stepping up to the challenge was Theo, who showed immense grit to battle through the tough opening barrage. He brilliantly anchored the top order, blunting the new ball to compile a crucial, determined 31 and lay the vital platform Swinbrook needed. With the foundation set alongside a solid 33 from Tom, Ben arrived at the crease and completely shifted the momentum. Putting on a masterclass of clean hitting, Ben blasted a blistering, unbeaten 51* to take the game away from the visitors in rapid fashion. Swinbrook comfortably crossed the finish line at 176/4, wrapping up a comprehensive win with 6 wickets to spare. It was a fantastic afternoon defined by great team cohesion, superb individual performances, and wonderful camaraderie on the field!

Away vs Deddington 2nd XI

The 2nd XI returned home victorious on Saturday after a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon on the road, built on runs up front and wickets when it mattered.

Asked to set the game up, the batting order delivered. John got the innings moving with what can only be described as a "top edge" performance — not everything came out of the middle, but every run counts the same in the scorebook, and his knock set the tone for the day. Ali then took charge with a well-made half-century, mixing sensible accumulation with some handsome strokes, and useful contributions all the way down the order kept the scoreboard ticking.

With the total mounting, skipper DB called the batsmen in just shy of 300 — a declaration that gave the bowlers plenty to work with while leaving the opposition something to chase, exactly as a good declaration should.

The reply never really got going. James was the pick of the attack, claiming three wickets to rip the heart out of the innings, and with the rest of the bowlers keeping things tight and the fielders backing them up, the result was rarely in doubt by the closing stages.

A deserved win away from home, then, and a performance with contributions throughout the side. Thanks as ever to the opposition for their hospitality, to the umpires and scorers, and to everyone who made the trip to support. On to next week.

1st XI away vs Kingston Bagpuize

Swinbrook made the trip to Kingston and produced a fine all-round performance in the field, bowling the hosts out for 127. The attack was disciplined from the outset, backed up by sharp catching and committed ground fielding, and Kingston were never allowed to settle. The pick of the bowlers was TJ, whose superb five-wicket haul ripped through the batting order and ensured all ten wickets fell for a very gettable total.

The chase, however, proved anything but straightforward. Wickets tumbled at regular intervals and what should have been a comfortable pursuit became a nervy affair, with Swinbrook still needing 40 when the ninth wicket fell. With the game seemingly slipping away, the last pair of Alfie and Ryan showed remarkable composure well beyond the situation's demands. Refusing to panic, they ticked the score over with sensible running and calm shot selection, gradually chipping away at the target.

To the delight of their teammates, the pair saw Swinbrook home by one wicket in a finish that had everyone on edge. It was a victory built on an outstanding bowling and fielding display, and rescued by a last-wicket stand that will live long in the memory. Special mention to TJ for his five-for, and to Alfie and Ryan, whose nerveless partnership turned a likely defeat into one of the wins of the season.

A tight contest at every turn, this one had the small crowd on edge until the very last over.

Swinbrook Under-15s edged out a determined Langford side in a match that went right down to the wire, chasing down their target with seven balls to spare to win by the narrowest of margins.

Put in to bowl first, Swinbrook set the tone with a disciplined effort in the field. The standout spell came from one of their seamers, who claimed three wickets to break the back of the Langford innings, while a second bowler chipped in with two crucial dismissals to keep the pressure on. Regular breakthroughs meant Langford could never quite build the momentum they needed, and they were held to a competitive but chaseable 116.

The reply was far from straightforward. Langford's bowlers made Swinbrook work for every run, and wickets at key moments kept the result in the balance. Two innings ultimately made the difference: a composed 23 steadied the chase at a nervous stage, before a fluent 33 pushed the score along and gave the side the platform they needed. Swinbrook crossed the line on 117, getting home with an over to spare in a finish that could have gone either way.

A thoroughly deserved win, and a fine advert for junior cricket from both sides.
