A federal study a decade ago concluded that man-made pollution exacerbates red tide, and it is widely believed that red tide, made up of Karenia brevis algae, gets seeded offshore at the bottom of the Florida shelf and carried inshore by bottom currents. As the algae gets close to coastal waters polluted by a host of sources, from farm and lawn fertilizer to leaky septic tanks, it can grow more intensely and create toxic blooms.
C. How?  This year’s red tide, the widespread death of fish began littering beaches and clogging canals as well with larger marine life, including sea turtles, dolphins, manatees and even a whale shark.

E. When?  This year’s red tide first appeared in October off Sarasota. In June, it deepened.
