As a bisexual woman, I grew up attracted to both men and women, and was constantly trying to excuse it with insecurity, desire for friendship, and the fact that I was still growing, changing and coming to terms with who I was as a person. Even though the US has made some great steps toward equality among genders and sexual orientation, there is still a long ways to go, and as someone who had to come out to her family and society, the work we still have to do is very apparent; it's almost palpable. My first essential question was how the LGBTQ+ community is treated differently than their cisgendered, heterosexual peers in society and in the government, which I was not surprised that I had so much information on. The steps that we still have to take as a nation are painted across the media in big block letters: Equality for all. My second essential question was how we can help our students understand their own freedom to explore their gender identity and/or sexual identity. A lot of the texts that I used focused on how educators can be helpful, but I realized that not a lot of my sources had to do with parents or other adults in society and how they can be allies.
