According to ABTA travel trends report in 2024 83% of people was booking their holidays online. This because it is easier and you can do it from everywhere. It is also faster because when going to going to a travel agent they will recommend holiday and it will take long. However, people booking with a travel professional has remained steady over the last couple of years with 35% of people having booked a product with a travel agent within the last year. Although older generations can be highly impacted because they are less likely to book holidays online. In 2017 only 4 % of over 654s used the internet to book a holiday or make travel arrangements where as in 2017 18-24 year olds 37% of people booked a holiday or made travel arrangements online. So if there if there is less travel agents on the high street older generations will struggle more.

Tui used a app called navigate that is sued on TUI cruises. It allows customers to book photoshoots, excursions and book tables at their speciality restaurants. Navigate also shows customers their itinerary and the cruise timetable of what is happening that day and where to go to take part. Everything on the boat is cashless. This can affect the older generation because older people may not be as confident using online app or devices.

The cost-of-living crisis refers to a period of time which the cost of everyday essentials e.g. bills and food increases more than average. the cost of living crisis has made prices sky rocket meaning that everything is more expensive. for example going to Devon on a domestic holiday is more expensive than previous years. this means that people don not have as much deposable income meaning they do not have money to spend on going on outbound holidays In October 2022, prices of consumer goods and services rose by 9.6% which was the fastest rate in four decades. In the year to January 2024 the annual CPIH inflation rate was 4.2%, unchanged from the previous two months.

There is multiple things that have causes the cost of living crisis. Things like Brexit this is because leaving the European Union the pound in weaker meaning that people get less for their money. there are other causes like Covid-19. Due to Covid-19 there was there was supply chain issues that caused prices to rise. The pandemic has played a leading role in the jump in inflation as lingering COVID-induced supply chain disruptions have made it difficult to find some items while driving up consumer prices. the other reasons is war in different country's because getting resources is harder than usual. The war led to the increase in oil prices and disrupted other exports including food, metals and gas. The conflict and resulting sanctions have disrupted exports from the region for commodities like metals, food, oil and gas, pushing up inflation to levels not seen in decades.

How has the cost of living impacted the UK Travel and Tourism Industry.

The travel and tourism industry has been impacted by the cost of living crisis. We know this because statistics know that 2,081 UK adults and 1,283 of those said they were considering a holiday abroad, of which 754 admitted their holiday plans were likely to be affected by volatility of the pound. In countries like Tallinn process have rose by 29%. The article states that 59% of people that are considering an overseas holiday said their plans were likely to be impacted by the cost of living crisis .Amongst these people, a quarter said they would pick a cheaper destination and a third would cut their spending budget. Another article states that the percentage of people that are booking package holidays have decreases. This is because holidays at a higher price point – sort of £600-800 per person and more – are proving more resilient than those that would be booking holidays for £300-500 and less. This means that people that are spending £300-£500 on holiday can not afford to be able to book a holiday because of the price increase . whereas people that are spending £600-£800 pound on a holiday would not be affects by the price increase.

`In 2020, British Airways stopped using plastic items such as drinks stirrers, packaging, water bottles, and retail bags. They replaced them with environmentally friendly alternatives from bamboo, paper, and recycled plastic. This may be a small change, but it has had a considerable impact, and British Airways aimed for these changes to result in 700 tons of single-use plastic being eliminated from their flights annually. Emirates has also been combatting single-use plastic waste since 2019. The airline began simply by replacing plastic straws with paper ones, then paper bags for inflight purchases instead of plastic ones. The company introduced other sustainability initiatives, such as using blankets made from recycled plastic bottles and recycling plastic bottles sold on flights. They believe these changes could prevent over 80 million single-use items from ending in landfills. In addition to this Jet engines are currently powered by a blend of traditional kerosene and sustainable aviation fuels (SAF). Airlines are investing in sustainable aviation fuels that reduce greenhouse gas emissions. They are made from renewable sources such as waste, non-food crops, and algae. For an example On November 28th, 2023, Virgin Atlantic made history by flying from London to New York using 100% sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). This is a massive step towards decarbonising travel.

Hotels like the Premier Inn have been working hard towards its sustainability targets. In Swindon last year they opened a new hotel. The hotel uses renewable electricity with the help from its many solar panels. The hotel has been made not to use gas, this is a pilot scheme for Premier Inn and if successful they will grow their portfolio of properties by removing gas connections to it’s hotels by 2040. On the BBC article premier inn have said that Swindon's 100% renewably powered Premier Inn shows that sustainability and affordability can be two sides of the same coin, and is part of a string of investments in innovative, sustainable properties at Whitbread.
