What happened: On August 6, a Little Boy was dropped on Hiroshima. Three days later, a Fat Man was dropped on Nagasaki. Over the next two to four months, the effects of the atomic bombings caused between 226000 deaths
Why is it significant: It marks as a end to the war and it also the mark were Japan surrender to everybody.

What happened: It was one of the first encounters or fights in the WW2, a big fight between American and German soldiers in which the Americans weren't as experienced as the Germans.
Why is it significant: It resulted in the victory of the Axis and in a in major reorganization of the U.S. Army. Lots of soldiers were killed and captured.
What if: The Germans had finished the fight quick so the planned invasion of France wasn't delayed and it would have been even bigger than it was.

What happened: This battle took place in France and Normandy. A fight where the Allies used over 5,000 ships and landing craft to land more than 150,000 troops from the U.S on five beaches in Normandy.
Why is it significant: First of all it successfully established Allied beachhead in France and neutralized the Atlantic Wall. It also resulted in withdrawal of German forces in northern France to Paris.
What if: If the Battle of Normandy resulted in a fail, the liberation of concentration camps would have been delayed and countless prisoners would've continued suffering.

What happened: The Battle of Iwo Jima was a major battle in which the United States Marine Corps and United States Navy landed on and captured the island of two Jima from the Imperial Japanese Army.
Why is it important: It was one of the most intensive battles of the Pacific theatre. Nearly 7,000 U.S. Marines were killed. Another 20,000 were wounded. It also resulted in most of the Japanese combatants being killed in action.
What if: If this battle wasn't fought, the US bombers wouldn't have been able to later use the Iwo Jima as an emergency landing base for American bombers. And wouldn't be able to conduct bombing raids on mainland Japan.
