Harriet Tubman and other slaves used songs as a strategy to communicate with slaves in their struggle for freedom. Coded songs contained words giving directions on how to escape also known as signal songs or where to meet known as map songs. This shows resilience by using songs as codes to escape from slavery. One of the songs was called "Wade in the Water." This was made by John Wesley Work II and his brother Frederick J. Work.

Propaganda about slaves escaping via The Underground Railroad, a system of Safe Houses and Hiding Spots used for escaping slave-supporting states.

The price for catching one was pretty high (especially back then), so it was very easy to encourage ordinary citizens to help with the chase. The type of propaganda is Plain Folks, appealing to people's everyday values. This amount of money could greatly impact those who gain it. I selected this type of propaganda because some people didn't have a problem with runaway slaves, but ads like these were used to inspire ordinary people to help out, rewarding a great sum of money. This is an example of injustice, because the government is trying to manipulate the general public to assist them. This made it even harder for slaves to escape.

Anti-slavery ad from the 1860's for an Anti-slavery Meeting to talk about how people can work to help stop slavery. Uses Bandwagon Propaganda, which is the appeal to be part of a group. I selected this ad because I wanted to show some of the resilience of slavery, not just ads for capturing slaves. It shows that the Northerners were gonna fight for their beliefs, that they'll take a stand and won't just sit around This is an example of resilience.

On a hot day in August 1963, Martin Luther King said a speech, that would define the civil rights movement and his legacy. This was the I had a dream speech, during the march for freedom. King mostly addressed small crowds at churches and fundraisers, but now there were 250,000 people present and millions watching on TV. King improvised the term "I have a dream" that crafted a soaring speech that would sear into the minds of millions of Americans. Highlighting King's skills as a preacher, "I have a dream", was part sermon and part poetry. This speech became defining moment not only of King's career, but the civil rights movement. King's response to the injustice on African Americans affected culture around the world. Banning segregation and making slavery illegal. The grouping of 250,000 people is the most resilient piece of the civil rights movement and showed the world just how big of an impact African Americans can have.

This clip is pointed to highlight the injustice that slaves endure. Slaves received unfair treatment, the man in this clip is being punished for going somewhere without orders. She defends the slave by saying, he did that for a piece of soap. The slave trade was a terrible event, something we take for granted, soap is so wanted. She claims "I smell so bad I make myself gag", slaves were overworked and given little to nothing in return.

One song that represents present day Black Lives Matter is "Freedom" made by Beyonce featuring Kendrick Lamar. Beyonce's Lemonade was largely an expression of the black female experience, but building on the political aspects of her "Formation" video — where she sang atop a sinking cop car in New Orleans — and Super Bowl performance — where she was surrounded by dancers in Black Panther uniforms — the pop superstar made one of the most striking political statements of her career with "Freedom." In the context of the visual album, the black-and-white clip that accompanies the track was followed by the interlude-like "Forward," in which the mothers of slain black men Trayvon Martin, Eric Garner and Michael Brown are seen holding pictures of their sons, whose deaths launched the Black Lives Matter movement. The key lyric was "Freedom! Freedom! I can't move/Freedom, cut me loose!/Freedom! Freedom! Where are you?/'Cause I need freedom too!"

The second timeline is the Civil Rights Movement, which is describing the rights black people had to fight for. The third timeline is Black Lives Matter, which is describing the violence of police killing innocent black people. You will see music, videos, and propaganda in the different three timelines.

In June 1962, a United States Court of appeals ordered the university of Mississippi to accept James Meredith. Mississippi Governor, Ross Barnett, personally blocked Meredith's two requests to enroll. Mississippi's Lieutenant governor, stopped his third attempt. Meredith's fourth attempt caused violent riots, which left 2 dead and several injured. In October 1962, President Kennedy sent marshals to escort Meredith. Meredith gained entry to the school, he didn't gain acceptance. Even Meredith's family was targeted, a bullet fired into his home nearly injured his teenage sister. On August 18, 1963, he became the first black to graduate from the University of Mississippi, earning a degree in political science. This was a turning point in the civil rights movement. James Meredith showed resilience when he fought for the right to go to a non-segregated university. He received backlash from the University and even the governor. Through all of this, he started a movement and gained the right for African Americans to go to school as one.

This is an example of resilience because they're telling everyone that they'll continue doing what they think is right until they succeed.

Black Lives Matter is a movement, that relates to the injustice in the African American culture. This began because of the 93 unarmed civilians killed by police, 40% were black. The movement started in 2012, when Trayvon Martin Was gunned down by George Zimmerman. Now the phrase #blacklivesmatter is an ongoing hashtag and movement. Black Lives
Matter shows resilience to the police shooting unarmed civilians.

It is a picture of an African American holding sign in front of a store as for an equal opportunity to get a job. I included this because I wanted to show that racism didn't just affect how Black people felt, but how they lived as well. This is an example of resilience and injustice. It shows resilience because he is stating what he believes is right to the public, even if he is frowned upon. It is an example of injustice because he wouldn't have to protest in the first place if racism wasn't so prevalent in his life, as well as other African Americans.
