         <description><![CDATA[<ul><li><p>The Battle of Britain was a significant air campaign that was fought between the United Kingdom and Nazi Germany during World War II.</p><ul><li><p>Germany aimed to gain air superiority over Britain after the fall of France in June 1940.</p></li><li><p>Now, the Luftwaffe wanted to destroy the Royal Air Force (RAF) to weaken the British defenses.</p></li></ul></li><li><p>This battle lasted from July 10 to October 31, 1940, and was primarily fought between the Royal Air Force (RAF) and the German Luftwaffe. It was the first major military campaign fought entirely by air forces.</p></li></ul>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>This photo shows the St Paul's Cathedral, an iconic Anglican cathedral in the heart of London, surrounded by a ring of fire. The area surrounding St Paul's had been leveled with only the St Pau's standing. It served as a beacon of hope for the citizens of London and showed that despite the endless bombing the spirit of the British was still alive.</p>]]></description>

These buildings once free-standing were reduced to mere building frames. This shows the scale of destruction seen. Despite the disaster, the firefighters were still determined to try to amend the situation. This picture shows the grit that many Britishers had during the Blitz.</p>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>This poster which was issued by the Ministry of Health, warns mothers  against bringing evacuated children back into urban areas. It uses an image of a worried mother with her children with a shadow of Hitler in the background. This shows the ever-lasting threat of the bombings. By saying that the mother should leave the children where they are, the poster shows the government's strategy to keep the children safe. </p>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>Quote 1: <strong>“Never in the field of human conflict was so much owed by so many to so few.”</strong></p><p><br></p><p>This quote commends the RAF pilots who defended the British against the Luftwaffe. This shows the bravery that the pilots exhibited despite having the nation on their backs.</p><p><br></p><p>Quote 2: <strong>“The gratitude of every home in our Island, in our Empire, and indeed throughout the world… goes out to the British airmen who, undaunted by odds, are turning the tide of the world war by their prowess and by their devotion.”</strong></p><p><br></p><p>Churchill expresses his gratitude to the pilots. He portrays them as the frontline of Britain's defense. He also yet again commends them for their strong morale despite the adversity that they face. </p>]]></description>

         <title>“London’s Burning” - Traditional Nursery Rhyme during Blitz</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>Quote 1: </p><p><strong>“London’s burning, London’s burning,</strong></p><p><strong>Fire, fire! Fire, fire!</strong></p><p><strong>Pour on water, pour on water.”</strong></p><p><br/></p><p>This rhyme actually predates WWII by hundreds of years. However, during WWII, it became one of the most popular rhymes sung during the German bombings. This rhyme reflected the fear and uncertainty that many of London's citizens shared during this time.</p>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>Quote 1: <strong>“The Blitz was not a short, sharp shock, but a slow, grinding assault on the fabric of everyday life.”</strong></p><p><br/></p><p>This quote from Gardineer shows that the bombings were not momentary or coming in short episodes but rather they were over a long period.</p><p><br/></p><p>Quote 2: <strong>“You’d hear the sirens and your stomach would twist with fear, but there was nowhere to run.”</strong></p><p><br/></p><p>This first-hand account shows the helplessness that the civilians felt during this time. The warning sirens were a nightly occurrence and a reminder that anyone's home could become a target at any time.</p><p><br/></p><p>Quote 3: <strong>“For many, the destruction of homes, shops, and schools tore at the very idea of community, yet it also bound neighbors together in shared adversity.”</strong></p><p><br/></p><p>This account shows the paradox of the blitz. While it broke up many homes it brought London together as one unified community.</p>]]></description>
