I scored a 104 out of 110. This did not surprise me a lot, as I have always considered myself to be an empath. I found that the questions I had to answer were mostly ones that I strongly agreed to, for example, feeling happy when those around me are happy.

“Affective Empathy” & “Cognitive Empathy”

The quiz sheds light on the differences between the two types of empathy. Affective empathy means that you are affected by the moods of those around you. Cognitive empathy means that you take other people's emotions into account. I find that I perhaps empathize better with considering other people's feelings. While I do get happy when others are happy, it is not always a constant thing.

Practice Active Listening

One of the ways to better empathy is to be a better listener. While I scored high on this, I think that I can better my skills at active listening. Sometimes I try to predict what someone might say. That doesn't make me a good listener. For example, a lot of times my boss will try to task me with something and I jump ahead to assume the task. A lot of times, it's not even what he was going to say.

I've always said that I am an empath because I read a lot. Especially growing up, I would read thick chapter books without thinking about it twice. I am an English major. I feel that getting into the minds of characters in books really shows one different perspectives. I really think that is why I scored a 104/110 on the quiz and why I am so empathic in real life.

I feel that being an empath often takes a lot out of me. I cry when those around me cry, I let my mood get altered by those around me. I try to keep everyone happy because I don't want to make people sad. And, if I upset someone, I often feel immense guilt. I like being empathic, but I also think that everyone needs to take care of themselves too.
