The Sports Development continuum within Tennis means how a player or athlete will increase through the stages to become better athlete and get better skills.
The Foundation Stage; The children will learn the basics of tennis in school PE lessons. They will learn the basic rules of tennis as well as, basic returning and hand to eye coordination.
The Participation stage; In the participation stage the participants will have had to enjoy tennis at school to progress to this stage. Here they will join a local tennis club and start having lessons outside of school to further improve their skills. they will probably train once or twice during this stage.
The Performance Stage; The performance stage for tennis means that you will be joining a academy or a special run programme for kids/ people who are Excelling in tennis, So this could mean they are training up to 3/4 times a week and they are going round playing competitions against other people in there group. This could mean they are traveling around there county to hopefully get picked to play for there county like East Riding Of Yorkshire would be a county so they might want to play for them. This means they have Great skills but thy are quite old enough or good enough to become professional.
The Elite Stage; The Elite stage means that the players will be playing at a very high level of competition so they will be playing for the best teams with the best sponsors and they will also be playing in the bigger tournaments, They will be doing this as a lifestyle and will be doing this up to 7 times a week they will train to have the best skills and best techniques.
Compare And Contrast

In Comparison with the 3 sports that i have chosen, You are most likely to become a professional football player then you are a Professional Rugby or Tennis player. There are Lots of Different Schemes and Programmes within these sports that will help you progress through the stages, In football there is more Schemes and Programmes then there is in Rugby and Tennis this is because they have more money then because there is a lot more fans and sponsors that follow football because its a big international sport whereas Rugby and Tennis dont have a every big following compared to Football so they dont get as much funding. Football Has such schemes as 'Premier League & The FA Facilities Fund' This helps with the local areas trying to get football pitches and areas to be able to play football on a actual pitch, Also there is 'Respect' Which is a organisation that helps out grass root teas that haven't got the equipment to be able to develop as a team and a squad this means they wont be able to develop and get better.Grow the Game, Facilities Scheme, Build the Game, Premier League Community Facility Fund, Mayor of London: Sports Facilities Fund. These are all the different schemes and funds to be able to develop the skills on all types of levels then on top of that there is lots of local events and schemes that your local School, Leisure Centre or Sports Centre will be allowing teams and people to be able to earn. Lots of the local councils will also have a lot of money set aside to be able to help out your local football pitches and local football grounds. When you get further into becoming professional you will also get a lot of sponsors and other things that will help you out like you will get New Boots and all the other equipment you may need to become the best you can. In Comparison we have rugby and tennis, rugby isn't as big and as funded as football but it still gets a lot of grants and funding compared to when we get onto tennis. Lets start of with the grants that Rugby will get, This consists of a few but not as many and not as much money as football would get with these grants. First We have 'Helping Hand Grants' This can be granted to small clubs and not the financial backing they need from members of the community or the players/ Players parents depending on the age range of the team members. The clubs can be given between £500 and £1500 to help cover the costs or new equipment Eg; Balls, Posts, Kits and Bibs. This can also cover refurbishment of training grounds, Match Day ground and Changing rooms. This will help the club to get recognised because they have good facilities and might allow/ welcome more players into there team.'Interest Free Loan Scheme' This is another scheme which helps out the clubs this is a loan of up to £100,000 Which will help the club with all there needs but with this usually is only allowed to bigger clubs with having a way of paying the funds back with certain payments. This means the club will be granted the loan but wont be able to spend it on what ever this would usually be for emergency situations. The final Grant that they are allowed to claim/ receive is the 'Green Deal Loans' This is granted to clubs that are getting new facilities, this is to cover the cost of the building or labour work that is needing to be used to be able to get these new facilities. This is a loan of up to £20,000. The sponsors that you may come into in rugby usually sponsor the clubs and dont actually sponsor the players as players are not as well known i the rugby scene as they are within the football scene this is due to the lack of fans compared to the amount at a football match. You can get a solo sponsor in rugby if you are playing at the top level nationally and internationally and then still the sponsors are hard to gain. Moving onto tennis there is not as much money within this are because not alot of people play/watch tennis so there is not as much money pumped into the sport. To become a high level elite tennis player takes a lot of time and sometimes a lot of your own financing as organisations dont seem to loom into tennis as much as they do other sports such as Football and Rugby. Still tennis is a big sport in the UK and still gets funding where it is needed. Our first scheme can start of when you are in school it is called the 'Tennis Foundation's Small Grants Scheme' This is a scheme where the schools can ask for up to £500 worth of funding and this will help them get the equipment they need to be able to teach student how to play the sport. This is so the children/ students may find a interest in the sport to go play it outside of the school to develop there skills. This can be harder in some areas to become a professional or High level tennis player because there is not as many areas where people can go play tennis as leisure centres and private clubs are the only ones who may have tennis courts to be able to play tennis and this can be expensive whereas if you want to practice football or Rugby you can just go to the local park or local grass are to be able to Kick and Catch a ball. Tennis also has another grant called '
Revenue / Grant Funding Scheme' this is for local ares to be able to get up to £4000 to be able to build a tennis court or get the equipment they need to be able to develop the skills of a tennis player. This grant is sometimes still not enough money to be able to get the stuff they need as tennis is a expensive sport to be able to play. The sponsors within tennis can be hard to obtain as they only sponsor the more elite players who are looked upon by the people who watch the sport and represent the sport as the non-elite players are not sponsored because they have no people watching them. Tennis players usually get sponsored when they are playing nationally at a high level and representing teams and clubs.
The Thing that all three of these sports in common is they all have scouts who will pick out the players with the most potential and the most chance of success in the sport and chosen area this means that it can be sometimes fairly easy to be found and be made into a star of that sporting scene. The only thing is that scouts only got to higher level games and tournaments to watch some of the best competitors in that sport so you still have to be at reasonably high standard to have a chance of been spotted.
In tennis they also have a ranking system as it is a solo sport so if the scouts recognise you are beating some of the best and climbing the ladder you will be chosen for sponsors and grants to be able to improve your skills.
