Archaeological Areas of Pompei, Herculaneum and Torre Annunziata

When Vesuvius erupted on 24 August AD 79, it engulfed the two flourishing Roman towns of Pompei and Herculaneum, as well as the many wealthy villas in the area. These have been progressively excavated and made accessible to the public since the mid-18th century. The vast expanse of the commercial town of Pompei contrasts with the smaller but better-preserved remains of the holiday resort of Herculaneum, while the superb wall paintings of the Villa Oplontis at Torre Annunziata give a vivid impression of the opulent lifestyle enjoyed by the wealthier citizens of the Early Roman Empire.

Costiera Amalfitana

The Amalfi coast is an area of great physical beauty and natural diversity. It has been intensively settled by human communities since the early Middle Ages. There are a number of towns such as Amalfi and Ravello with architectural and artistic works of great significance. The rural areas show the versatility of the inhabitants in adapting their use of the land to the diverse nature of the terrain, which ranges from terraced vineyards and orchards on the lower slopes to wide upland pastures

The main body of the San Leucio estate is the ancient Belvedere hunting lodge, transformed by King Ferdinand IV of Bourbon into a silk spinning mill to create an ideal community of workers, who were guaranteed homes, schools, medical care and All the services.

A portion of historic center was declared a world heritage site by UNESCO in 1995 for its exceptional monuments, which testify to the succession of cultures of the Mediterranean and Europe. In the entire historic city, which refers to a larger territory than the historic centre, we recognize the value of an extraordinary concentration of points of interest: in this regard, in 2017 the BBC defined Naples as «the Italian city with too much history to manage". The particular uniqueness of the historic center of Naples lies in the almost total conservation and use of the ancient road layout from the Greek era.

Herculaneum was founded by Hercules in 1243 AC: in all probability, however, it was founded either by the Oscans in the 12th century AC, as written by Strabo, or by the Etruscans between the 10th and 8th centuries DC. It was conquered by the Greeks in 479 BC. and subsequently came under the influence of the Samnites, before being conquered by the Romans in 89 BC, following the social war, becoming a municipality. The city then became a residential place for the Roman aristocracy and experienced its period of maximum splendor with the tribune Marco Nonio Balbo, who embellished it and had new buildings built. It was later hit by the Pompeii earthquake of 62 and then completely buried under a blanket of mud and pyroclastic materials, from ten to twenty-five meters high, following the eruption of Vesuvius in 79: this layer, over the years, solidified , forming a rock plane called pappamonte, similar to tuff but softer, which protected the remains of the city.
