         <description><![CDATA[<div>To teach students how human needs and concerns are addressed within cultures.To learn how the tipi was an important part of family history to the Plains Indians.To design and assemble their own tipi.</div><div><br></div><div>Imagine not being able to buy your clothes, tools, food, and household items at a store! During this lesson students will challenge themselves to think about how they would meet their needs using the natural environment around them. They will discover that long ago many Plains Indian tribes had to use the natural resources around them to survive. </div><div><br></div><div>This lesson will introduce students to a traditional Plains Indian story about a mischievous young man who gets his head stuck in a buffalo skull. Then they will discover the culture of Plains Indians and buffalo as the presenter introduces them to our hands-on collection pieces. How did Plains Indians use the fur, hide, sinew, bones, and even bladder of the buffalo in their everyday lives? The lesson meets several Common Core Standards as well as national standards in history and social studies.</div>]]></description>

Students will learn how the cave was formed and about some of the unique features from formations to fossils found in Wind Cave. Students will examine how human population affects the cave environment, the cave exploration taking place in the past and today, as well as the unique challenge of preserving a cave that over 150,000 visitors go into each year.          <description><![CDATA[<div>Much of what historians now know about the Indians we call "the Powhatans" is derived from English sources, as the Powhatans had no written language. </div><div><br></div><div>Using primary sources as well as replica artifacts created by Mattaponi Indians, students will learn about what life was like in Virginia before the first English settlers made it their home. Students will identify the various natural resources used by Native American men, women, and children to make their tools and clothing. Students will also be engaged in a discussion about Pocahontas and the myths associated with her life. Examine your own experiences with and feelings about injustice in order to build empathy with activists resisting the Dakota Access Pipeline, an oil pipeline that was built through Native land in violation of a treaty. </div><div><br></div><div>In this program, students will explore the difficult choices and consequences Northern Plains Native Nations faced when entering into treaty negotiations with the United States during the period of westward expansion.
