upbringing, educational and career background, religiosity, anyone they found inspirational

Raniere was born on August 26, 1960, in Brooklyn, NY. Money was tight for his family, leading to a move to Suffern, NY and his father being often away for work. His parents would fight constantly, leaving Raniere to wonder if he was to blame for their arguments. The fighting and absence of his father ultimately led to his parent's divorce when he was 8 years old. Raniere lived with his mother who suffered from heart disease; his father was no longer in his life. At age 13, his mother had open heart surgery which developed an emotional strain in their relationship. Raneire would often think about how his mother could die at any time, leaving him all alone in this world, as he was an only child and had no close relatives living nearby. He devoted most of his time to caring for his mother, although she started drinking heavily at this time.

His struggling home dynamics did not affect him academically though. He strived in high school and was admitted early to Rensselaer Polytech Institute (RPI), in Troy, NY. A former headmaster at Rockland Country Day School described him as "a brilliant student of mathematics and science and certainly an adequate student of humanities, well prepared for college academically, socially, and emotionally". However, some previous classmates stated that Raniere was a quiet loner, an avid chess player, and a kid who did not seem to hang out with anyone or have friends. He graduated from RPI in 1982 with majors in computer science, biology and mathematics.

Throughout the 80s, Raniere was involved with Amway, a multi-level marketing company before he launched his own, Consumers' Buyline Inc (CBI) in 1990. This buying company offered discounts in exchange for recruitment. In 1994, he created National Health Network, a multi-seller of vitamins that failed three years later.

During an interview with Barbara Bouchey (ex-girlfriend), she describes a phone call she had with Raniere's father explaining to her how when Raniere had an intelligence test at 8 years old, a "switch went off" when he found out he was gifted. James Raniere explained to Bouchey that "suddenly overnight, [Keither Raniere] turned into Jesus Christ and he was superior and better than everybody like a diety".

Raniere's constant presentation of his high intelligence coerced followers to trust him and what he preached. He presented himself as someone who was uniquely intelligent and enlightened. He promised members that he could help provide them with growth in their lives, both personally and professionally. By making these promises, it would benefit him because it would result in hefty financial payments or unethical, illegal activities.

He would listen to individuals very carefully and that was a part of his charisma. Heidi Hutchinson, a former member, explained that "when [Raniere] was listening [to a conversation] he was actually calculating how to influence you through [the] conversation".

Raniere used psychological tactics to exploit the vulnerabilities of his followers and use this to maintain dominance. By exploiting the vulnerabilities he would offer solutions that were only provided by NXIVM thus increasing the dependency an individual would have on NXIVM.

Raniere used manipulation and blackmail to enforce obedience to the group. This was prominently seen within the subgroup, DOS. He would manipulate women into becoming slaves by branding them with his initials. He would require them to provide collateral, which included nude photos, confidential information or documents that were signed under duress. If any of these women disobeyed or leave the group he would use this collateral against them.

to keep followers' attention on the words and wishes of the charismatic leader, he or she may alter the policies and practices of the group, sometimes very suddenly

quickly into the development of NXIVM there became a pyramid scheme. An individual would be identified as a 'master' (typically someone highly renounced in the group) and their job was to collect 'slaves'. These slaves would then have to provide collateral to their masters to prove their loyalty and, commitment and in case they ever tried to leave the group

according to the FBI, Allison Mack was Raniere's personal slave. He was her 'master' and the collateral she gave him was a legal document that stated if she were to break her commitment; her home would be placed into Raniere's name and her future children (birthed by her) would be his. Letters that addressed the abuse of her nieces.

some charismatic leaders may seek constant reaffirmation of loyalty from their followers, leading to an escalation in the demands they place on members for personal service and sacrifice to the group

around 2015, women were being approached by other female members in the group asking if they felt 'stuck' in their growth and wanted to join secretive women-only self-help group

this group, DOS or The Vow, claimed to be an additional subgroup of NXIVM, meant solely to promote female empowerment

Many charismatic leaders test loyalty, heighten emotional dependence, and generally disrupt potential sources of alternative authority by criticizing or even physically separating couples and other close pairings within the religious groups

Former member, Toni Natalie states that after Raniere helped her quit smoking she was hooked. However, after one year of first meeting Raniere her marriage had ended. Raniere had convinced her that her husband was sleeping with their nanny.

women within DOS, were told that to show their commitment and loyalty to the sisterhood they would have to seduce Raniere, as he did not prefer to put himself on the line when it came to sexual interactions

Charismatic leaders will often call into question the inspired messages of all competitors for authority, both external and internal to the group

women who joined the DOS were to be branded with a symbol.

if you looked closely at this symbol there would be small initials of K.R. (Keith Raniere) that literally branded his authority within the group

When all else fails, and sometimes earlier, some charismatic leaders have tried to consolidate their control and diminish countervailing influences by changing the location, and hence the operating environment, of their groups. often these moves are to a more isolated spot.

Although this group never moved to an isolated area, the majority of the group lived in Clifton Park, a town just outside of Albany, NY. A testimony from a former member explained that she was forced into isolation, in her family home.

members would encourage individuals to move to Clifton Park, New York (where Raniere and many other members resided) to help the group's mission

Michelle, a former member, explained in her testimony that when she confided in Raniere about a relationship she had with another member her freedom and possessions started to slowly, including her phone, iPod, computer and immigration papers and documents (she was from Mexico)

this relationship had been deemed as an 'ethical breach' and Raniere has manipulated her family to believe that the only way Michelle could rid of the breach was to stay in isolation in her family home indefinitely

Michelle was in isolation for almost two years with nothing to do but write letters to Raniere

the precautiousness of charismatic leadership reinforces the tendency of members to demonize their enemies

throughout the trial, Raniere would remind his remaining followers that reports on NXIVM in the media could not be trusted

he stated that the media was dishonourable
