Teaching the Music of Language - Steady Beat and Reading Fluency - Marcia Daft by The Goofy Teacher

Numerous research studies have documented that children’s ability to hold a steady beat is critical to developing their reading fluency. This workshop introduces early childhood educators to this powerful relationship. First, explore skill-building activities designed to improving students’ mastery of syllabication and accent, auditory discrimination skills, and visual tracking skills. Then, learn how to read poems and children’s books with steady beat, rhythm and phrasing that work together to support fluency and comprehension. Join musician and national teaching artist Marcia Daft for a workshop experience that will transform the way you think about teaching reading in early childhood. Recommended for teachers of ESL students.

- When teaching beats, you can tell which students are struggling by their ability to keep a steady beat. (these tend to be students who struggle with fluency, etc. in ELA)
- Key concept: rhythmic clapping using flow and movement to demonstrate syllables in words to foster high-level fluency.
- Poetry: using nursery rhymes and steady beat to decode and comprehend poetic writing. Use beat and tapping different parts of the body to go through each line.
-- As you progress with upper grades, you can do this with beat-based poetry.
