The first children’s book that that matches the theme of “make your own choices” is Colonial Voices: Hear Them Speak by Kay Winters. This book centers on young Ethan, an errand boy for a local printer. The story follows Ethan as he delivers an important notice to everyone in Boston about an important meeting regarding the colonies and the impending revolution. This book matches the theme because Ethan interacts with many different people from the printer to the baker to the teacher among many others. The points of view of each of these characters is introduced and the reader gets to see their thoughts about the American Revolution and independence. My Brother Sam is Dead is important because it shows how some people were for and against the American Revolution as opposed to everyone just agreeing that it was good to revolt. Similarly this children’s book shows how everyone felt about the Revolution as opposed to just one view point of Patriotism.

Throughout the novel Tim is faced with a series of choices. He never knows what is the right thing to do. Tim wants to be treated as an adult and be respected in the same way that his brother Sam is, but Tim is not Sam and he needs to figure out how to be his own person without the influence of his father and brother. I Can Do Hard Things is a book that helps children to combat the peer pressure that they may feel through various positive affirmations and it is obvious from reading My Brother Sam is Dead, that Tim feels a lot of pressure from everyone to choose a side. Both books send the message of doing what is best and right for you as opposed to everyone else and what everyone else wants you to do.

I personally would have the students first use Colonial Voices: Hear Them Speak and pick certain characters to focus on (printer, baker, teacher etc.) It would be their job based on the book to decide whether to be a Patriot, Loyalist, or remain neutral. I would have them research about those jobs and/or life in the 1700s to help them make their decision and then write a paragraph explanation. I would have the students read I Can Do Hard Things when we finished reading My Brother Sam is Dead.
