While Egyptian society was unified under one ruler, Mesopotamia was separated into independent city-states.

BECAUSE the Nile River made it easier to travel and communicate throughout the territory. Due to infighting in Mesopotamia, people grouped together to form independent city-states.

- Nile river flowed south to north (communication, exchange, unity, stability)
- the wind patterns make it easier to travel south along the Nile
- warfare caused people to flee from rural areas for protection
- no natural barriers, more violent outlook on life
-fighting over resources, protection, timber, the cities up north are diverting river for their own benefit
