The Gallipoli campaign was a military campaign that took place on the Gallipoli peninsula, from 17 February 1915 to 9 January 1916. The Allies powers, Britain, France and Russia, sought to weaken the Ottoman Empire, one of the Central Powers, by taking control of the Turkish straits. At dawn on 25 April 1915, Allied troops landed on the Gallipoli peninsula in Ottoman Turkey. The Gallipoli campaign intended to allow Allied ships to pass through the Dardanelles, capture Constantinople and ultimately knock Ottoman Turkey out of the war. The Gallipoli Campaign was a major defeat for the Allies (Britain, France and Russia) and a great victory for the Ottoman Turks (and their allies Germany and Austria-Hungary).

The Gallipoli Campaign video

Unrestricted submarine warfare was first introduced in World War One in early 1915-1916, when Germany declared the area around the British Isles a war zone, in which all merchant ships, including those from neutral countries, would be attacked by the German navy. Unrestricted attack did not abide by military codes of the sea. The sinking of the Lusitania was an important event in World War I. The death of so many innocent civilians at the hands of the Germans galvanized American support for entering the war, which eventually turned the tide in favor of the Allies. This 'unrestricted submarine warfare' angered neutral countries, especially the United States an the the tactic was stopped

Unrestricted submarine warfare Video

With World War I, the Ottoman Empire looked for opportunities, including the mass deportation of Armenians in the Anatolia area of modern day Turkey. This came with large destruction and genocide, happening during and after the war. It was characterized by the use of massacres and deportations involving forced marches under conditions designed to lead to the death of the deportees. Between one and one and a half million Armenians were exterminated, along with other races such as Greeks, Assyrians, and some scholars.

As one of the bloodiest battles in history, the Battle of the Somme took place during July 1 and November 1 of 1916. This offensive battle began partially to relieve France of some of the pressure from Germany in the Battle of Verdun. The British army attacked north of the Somme with fourteen infantry divisions, while the French attacked astride and south of the Somme with five divisions. In defense, the German army deployed seven divisions. Within only the first day of fighting, the British lost over 57,000 men.

Starting February 21st, 1916, the battle of Verdun, France was the longest single battle of World War 1. The German attack and the battle following it would last over 300 days. In order to advance the 8 miles needed to capture Verdun, the first mass usage of flame throwers took place by the Germans. With the battle, over 700,000 men were killed in only 10 months. The high casualties was a leading factor in Britain's decision to start the Battle of the Somne, in hopes to release some of Germany's pressure on France.

The Argonne Offensive campaign began in September of 1918 in Northeastern France. After a summer of success in the Allied Forces, new soldiers and supplies as well as American soldiers helped in the final push back of German troops. With this attack, the Germans determined that they could not win the war, and Kaiser abdicated. German armistice followed on November 11, 1918. Germany suffered a loss of over 1 million soldiers.
