Men from all over the world rush to California for the Gold Rush. After James Marshall, a carpenter, was building a sawmill on the American River when he struck gold. Though, this was a couple months ago, men still keep flooding to the Sierra Nevada Mountains looking for gold that they can make money off of and send back to their families and or hoping to make the dream of Manifest Destiny (the belief the the United States was destined to stretch across the continent from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean) true. California economy is booming because of this recent gold rush and some say it will continue to boom. Not only has the economy boomed but a small city they call San Francisco is rising up and growing in population. But not all good is coming from the gold rush, thousands of Native Americans have died because of disease or have been killed by miners because of the belief that they are standing in the way of progress. Now that California has applied for statehood, some fear that Congresses discussion on whether it should be a free or slave state could impact the future of America.

It's very hard to be a miner out here. Most of the American miners hate us and chase us away from their mining sites. But it's not too hard to find abandoned mining sites the American's left. Though all the easy gold is gone, but if you are patient and dig a little deeper, you are sure to find some more gold. The living conditions are not so great, but it's a lot better than back in China where there is crop failures and backbreaking work.

Life out here is pretty rough out, especially in mining camps. I usually spend my days in knee-deep icy water and shifting through mud and sand just to find a little bit of gold. But on top of that, the food here is not very good and disease spreads like wild fire, so I'm not as strong as I used to be. Things here are also very expensive and I can barley get enough gold to feed myself. I hope one day I can get enough gold like the stories told by the men here.
