Empathy for Elephant Seals

Every winter, young male northern elephant seals seek rest and refuge on a busy public beach in San Simeon, California. These 3000 lb. seals have been driven from the nearby birthing and breeding beaches following conflicts with more dominant adult male seals. With full respect for these seals, we call them "the bachelors." Our volunteers support these resting seals by educating beach visitors to mitigate wildlife disturbances and ensure public safety. These viewing guidelines help the public to develop empathy for these seals and understand the effect of human activity. Literature Review on Drones Effects on Birds, Marine Mammals, and Turtles

Hi All, I wanted to post this scientific literature review, which is a great resource for studies on the effects of drones on wildlife.

The report also provides a review of sanctuary permits and special conditions related to uncrewed aerial systems. It makes operations and policy recommendations based on the literature and Office of National Marine Sanctuary permit reports reviewed. It was also supplemented by field experience and UAS operational expertise. Special thanks to Stewards of the Coast and Redwoods for providing some of the information that was key to the recommendations in this report.

My interest in wildlife disturbance began from my observations of wildlife disturbance by locals, visitors and a capstone project showing just how large of an issue it really is.

Founder of AdvenTOURess and WildSENSE, I provide virtual and live experiences helping people connect, understand, and appreciate nature.

Integrating earth etiquette and other education prior to arrival to an area is a missing piece of the puzzle and one I am targeting to address.

My specialties are animal behavior and captive wildlife training and management. Monikers? California Naturalist, Certified Interpretive Guide and Wildlife Whisperer.

I donate time and talent to the Monterey Bay Aquarium in many roles and to the Monterey Marine Protected Area Collaborative.
