America's insistence on economic development pushed a capitalist agenda which the USSR was wary of as the cost of the venture was the way of living they had grown accustomed to and the power of USSR leadership. On the other side of the spectrum however, can be seen the fear of communism which also threatened the western countries' ideologies. Because of the expansion of communism, capitalist countries had a similar fear of being overrun. What sparked The Cold War was the conflicting ideas of the nations, in particular the capitalist vs. communist ideology, which heightened tensions due to the fact the USA was wary of communists, while the USSR was mistrusting of capitalism. The competition to become a world superpower heightened to threatening proportions, and the fact that each nation had their own growing agendas was a contributing factor in tensions between the countries. For example, the USA strived to maintain a good, democratic relationship in Western European nations to the point they constructed the Marshall Plan to keep their economy of mass consumerism. In contrast, the USSR wanted to spread the ideas of communism by expanding their influence through Eastern Europe and providing a buffer between Soviet land and capitalist nations. Because of these changes, the USSR and USA were wary of each other's true motivations and both concluded that they were out to hurt the other. Because of this miscommunication, the threat of The Cold War grew. Stalin was exceptionally paranoid, which led to the idea that America was a threat to the USSR. The development and use of the atomic bombs by the United States on Japan(Hiroshima) was an act to end the war but it was also a political statement towards the Soviet Union. This combined with Stalin's expansionist intentions created enough tension for retaliation.
