"A second IRSP spokesman, Willie Gallagher, said the INLA would not apologise for one of its most infamous attacks, the under-car bombing that killed Mr Neave as he left the House of Commons in 1979... a former INLA prisoner, said: 'Airey Neave was a casualty of war. We have no regrets whatever about that particular action.'"

"'We viewed Airey Neave as an enemy combatant and a casualty of war. Of course, we do sympathise with his family, like all families that have been bereaved on both sides.

'We do regret all deaths, but we believe that deaths such as Airey Neave were necessary in the conflict and our prosecution of the war'" (Daily Mail Reporter, "INLA Decommissions")

Why It's Referenced

The reference to Airey Neave in the play could mean one of two things: either McDonagh wants to make light of his murder by making Neave the butt of a joke by saying he died not because of his political power but because he has a funny name or because McDonagh wants to remind those who read/see the play that it is not just about some made up terrorist group and a crazy, cat-loving man but a play that has real-life significance and context connected to it. I believe that it is the second option. McDonagh give his play power by subtly critiquing the need for terrorist and political violence that is underlying the plot of TLoI.

Unfortunately there were no documented thoughts on what people think about McDonagh using real-life deaths in his play that I could find. His wife, Diana, had already passed away in 1992, and if his children had a reaction to the use of his murder in the play, it is not published.
